Just turned 51 and feel like a big soft marshmallow. I have gained about 15 lbs since June of 2008 and I would love to loose 10 lbs by April 1, 2010. My first grandchild is due in early April and I would love to get rid of at least some of my "grandma" lap and look like a young grandma by the time the grandchild arrives! I love to ride bike and ride around 2,500 miles a year. Sometimes long summer rides work to my disadvantage as I HAVE to eat a lot to keep from feeling lightheaded. So my goal is to loose some of the menopausal weight gain before spring riding starts and then to focus on eating healthier when I'm biking during the summer months and not to fuel up with empty carbs and post-ride beer!

Delayed Gratification
Thank you for putting this into perspective for me. The little voice that says "you deserve it" has side tracked me so many times. Yes, I deserve it - but even more I deserve the right to be healthy! I'm trying to get away from the mind set of diet which = punishment and think more in terms of healthy = unlimited possibilites.

serious now
Welcome BJwinz - I'm a 51 y.o. mother of two, both out of the house. I'm soon to be a grandmother and can't wait! I had a really hard time getting serious and menopause seemed to make it impossible to loose weight but this site has done so much to help me be more accountable. And I've been amazed at the support from everyone - although strangers, we are kindred spirits on this journey! I live in the midwest and am so sick of winter - can't wait for warm spring days to melt away these ugly piles of dirty snow!

Breakfast Ideas
I love the chewy texture and slightly nutty flavor of oatmeal from steel cut oats, specifically the McCann’s Steel Cut Oats brand. The thing I dislike is that they normally take 30 minutes to cook and they seem to always boil over and make a mess of the stove. But I found this overnight method and it works very well and doesn’t create a mess.
Before going to bed, boil four cups of water in a pot and add one cup of oatmeal. Turn the stove to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 5 minutes. Turn off stove and leave overnight. In the morning I divide the oatmeal into 4 sandwich bags and refrigerate. When ready to use put the oatmeal in a bowl and microwave for 1 minute. I add a few raisins, chopped walnuts, cinnamon and soy milk, yummy and it stays with me all morning.

A friend told me about this book: http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Health-Big-Book-Exercises/dp/1605295493; Women's Health Big Book of Exercises. It was 20% off when I got it at Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago. I especially love the specific plans they have for different fitness goalas at the back of book - so you know which combination of exercises works best with your goals.
