7 years ago, I was a US Marine weighing in at 200lbs, 6'1". I was a little pudgy, but then, I have always had problems with my weight. My lowest recorded adult weight was 195 in 1997, the day I left bootcamp. In the Marines, anything heavier than 203 at my height was "fat", so I flirted with that weight my entire 5 year career.

After leaving the Marines, my weight jumped up 75 lbs in 2 years. Then crept up another 10 lbs in the next 5. Now, I can barely climb the stairs to my apartment without losing breath. My knees hurt to climb or descend stairs. I have chronic back problems stemming from an injury during my military service. In the morning, I can't find the energy to get out of bed and in the evening, I can't find the energy to do housework or even cook a descent meal.

But all that is about to change, now that I have decided to make this momentous change in my life. :)

Ketosis
I was just commenting in my journal how Ketosis is not mentioned in the new Atkins book, while it was a primary issue in the old New Revolution book.

Anyone know what the current thought on ketosis is? I read on wikipedia that it is a way for the brain to get energy when glucose is not being burned for fat. It's a "starvation mechanism", according to wikipedia. Fat cannot be used by the brain for energy, so ketosis transforms fat to glucose, or something like that.

However, I'm not so sure that is a bad thing, as some people claim. Since starting Atkins, and being in ketosis, I'm sure, I have had more physical energy than I've had in a long time. But with that, I've also felt sharper mentally as well. So, whatever method my body is using to power my brain, it must be working. My thoughts are clearer and I have not been getting into mental "funks" like I used to eating "normally". I've also felt less depression and more desire to function in a social environment. That is not ALL due to my weightloss and better body confidence. I'm still overweight (got 90lbs to go), but I feel more sociable than I did a month ago.
