For Puhpine and anyone else who is interested. Perhaps the beginnings.
Jason Bejcar tipped his head back and rolled it to move the sweat on his back into the material of his shirt. The suit made him too hot, but he didn’t dare do this without it.
The house was a simple rancher with all the attributes he looked for – no vehicles, no toys in the yard, no dog house or pet door, and poor locks. It was clean and well-kept except for the grass.
His upbringing still told him it was wrong regardless of the situation, though surely no one would fault him, would they? If you hadn’t earned something, you didn’t take it. That’s how he’d been brought up. Who could he ask to see if it were different now. He crossed the street – his heartbeat and the speed of his breathing loud in his ears. Barely noticing the sound of the scuff of his feet on the dirt covered pavement, he looked to his left and right while the guilt rose within him. He could still feel the eyes watching him from the house behind, but seeing no one else, he lifted his foot and kicked in the door.
The fear gripped him, but he managed to fight it back and stepped inside. Only the smell of his acrid suit greeted him. Jason scanned the kitchen quickly and walked into the living room. He pulled the sofa away from the wall and tipped over the recliner in the corner. Nothing. The first bedroom was beautiful, minimalist. He opened the closet. Clothes. He overturned the bed. A dust bunny pushed rolled across the floor. He would put the bed back if he decided to stay a while.
The second bedroom was also empty. He smiled when he entered the third. It had been converted to a larder. It would be a lot of food to move, but he’d manage, and it would be well worth it. The recreation room contained a full sized billiard table, a wet bar – the alcohol would be useful – and bar tables and chairs.
He moved through the house, carefully checking each closet and cupboard. This was going to be a good haul. There was only one more place to look. The large grate in the wall of the living room was a perfect hiding place, and he’d noticed it was not screwed on. He prised off the grate with a butter knife from the kitchen, stuck his head inside, and looked down the duct. Empty.
He went through the house a second time, opening all the windows and door. The stink of his own body was almost too much for him to endure. He was tempted to take off the suit, but that would be foolish. Sweat was dripping off his brow, and he could feel it had saturated his shirt. Satisfied the house would air out quickly given the breeze, Jason quickly stepped outside, ripped off the hood of the hazmat suit with a gasp, and took several deep breaths of fresh air. He stripped down quickly, tossed his shirt onto the front step of the house, and lay down on the walkway. He was hidden from view, not that it mattered, below the height of lawn that hadn’t been mowed in at least two months.
It was the cool breeze rustling the grass and weeds around him that brought him back to consciousness after a quick nap. He stretched, yawned, and ran his fingers through his hair. Sitting up, he wrapped his arms around his knees, and considered the desiccated corpse that was staring at him, sightless, from the rocking chair across the street.
“Sorry, old timer.” He shook his head and let out a deep sigh. “Who knows. Maybe you were the lucky ones.”
