Missychick21's Journal, 14 January 2014

Well, the doctor didn't weigh me yesterday, I never even saw the nurse the dr called me back himself. I hadn't been in since July and I told him it was just a medication refill. He was actually nice to me the whole time! He added refills to my meds and was concerned about my back still bothering me. He didn't say I was stupid or just fat. He was happy about trying to lose the weight and that I quit drinking soda. He feels bad that I have such a hard time with food and just wants to see me healthy. It's like "who is this guy and what did he do with my doctor??" He asked how much I weighed and didn't even flinch when I said 250. He didn't even tell me I needed to lose ALL the weight, he said if I could lose 10% or 25 pounds then My body would feel better and he will try to get me in to the doctor for my back again. The one that said I wasn't a candidate for surgery at this time. So basically a much better appt than I expected.

I ended up getting dinner before coming home but it was a papa Murphy's thin crust pizza so it was only like 350 calories for 2 slices. Not too bad when I didn't really eat much yesterday.

With not taking my meds for a few days I am dragging today from taking them last night, so I don't know if I'm going to workout or nap when the kids go to school.

Need to get a nice cold glass of ice water. Cheers!!

It is always good to shoot for 10% because it is more "doable" than 50 pounds (psychologically). Plus, he is right, losing just 10% can make you feel so much better that you want to lose more. Glad your visit went well and keep going on your journey.

Thank you Suzi :) I was really just amazed at how nice he was this time. Instead of being mad I haven't lost in 6 months he was proud of what I am doing to try and lose :)

Good luck! I agree just focus on 10% first, keep at it!

Glad your visit was a good thing. Maybe he has changed some thing in his attitude toward his patients

Lots can happen in 6 months and apparently it worked out for the better with him :)

Keep up the good work. I agree - I set a tiny short term goal for myself of about 20 pounds. In reality I should probably lose 75 but the thought of that is too overwhelming for me. If and when I get down 20, I will re-set the goal and so on.

I have similar experiences with doctors. I was to the point where I just wouldn't even go to a doctor anymore. I am happy to see that your doctor has improved his attitude toward you. I don't tolerate attitudes from physicians or other professionals. If I don't find them to be professional and genuinely concerned with my health, I take my money elsewhere. It is a business just like anything else and I have learned there are plenty of other excellent doctors out there.

I have 120 to lose and it is very overwhelming, so I am trying hard to just think of small baby steps. One day at a time. Crappy insurance made me go to that dr in the first place but I am glad his attitude is much better :)

I am doing what Lizcerri was talking about...small weight goals. Personally If I look at the 100lbs i need to lose, it freeks me out...smaller goals seem to me easier to attain...i also plan on rewarding each small goal with something fun...not sure what yet...lol

I can't think of good little rewards either lol

Something I did to sort of trick myself into continuing this journey when I had 115 pounds to lose as I started out was I would count up my mileage instead of waiting for the scales to go down. I pledged myself at first to walk a mile a day. I increased that to two miles a day by the third week. I kept track of my mileage weekly. Focusing on that number going up kept me from getting discouraged by waiting for the scale to go down. I run nightly now, but in the beginning I struggled just to walk a block. I am about half way to my goal now and I still use the same approach. The weight will come off if you make healthy choices and continue to exercise.

Happy that our doctor seemed "human" today!

I have a hard time walking with my back issues but I do try to focus on trying to exercise 4 days a week when everyone is gone at school or at work.

LOL thanks Buffy I was pleasantly surprised!

As you become more fit and your abs and core get stronger it may help you back issues. I know sounds crazy. I worked for two physiatrists for several years (docs who's specialty is physical therapy).

I have a herniated disc right above my tail bone which is what causes my problems. It has also made my right hip swell and make it numb along with partly down my leg. Been going on for 7 years.

Wholefoodnut is still right. And it doesn't sound crazy. I've had a slipped disc in my lower back going on 3 years and every time I stretch it out it really helps! Yoga is the key to that and you don't have to do crazy poses. I went to Mercy Healthplex and one of the Yoga Experts gave me a one on one and showed me poses you can do that you can't even feel directly in your back. That's just my recommendation. I was told i'm not a candidate for surgery as well so this is the best idea and warm water therapy is really good as well.

I've had it for 7 years, and the weight has just been piling on since it happened because it's hurt so bad to move my body.

Yup--thanks Elizatay. My docs would try everything first to avoid any spinal surgery. Building up the abs and obliques help support the back and take the pressure off. Losing weight can also help because excess weight pulls you spinal alignment off and puts much more stress on the discs. Physical therapists can assist you with exercises that will help with your situation. Also some will actually help expand the disc space--Personally I'm so excited about getting to go back to the gym partly because I have an Siactic nerve issue due to a disc that slips a bit now and then--off and on since an injury back in jr high (am now 64) It's been bothering my sleep lately. I can normally work it out through exercise. I used to monitor the spinal cord activity during those surgeries to alert the docs if they were encroaching too far. Surgery is not pretty and even though it is now done pretty routinely however it's never without risks.

I'd love for my back to be fixed without surgery, I will just keep trying to be healthier and go from there :)
