BuffyBear's Journal, 12 January 2013

This morning I am doing some experimenting. I had bought a bunch of ingredients to make protein shakes, so now I have to find the right recipe. Mix number one just got poured down the sink - YUCK!

Mix number two is drinkable, but I am sure it can be improved upon. After spending all this money I am determined to find one I like.

Hi Buffy, I bought some whey protein powder as well. I don't drink it as a shake though. I make pancakes out of it. Use the powder as batter, I add an egg (optional), a drop of vanilla, dash of cinnamon, whipping cream for consistency, and 2 packets of sweetener. Mix that all up, put it in a small skillet with butter, and you have a perfectly round tasty pancake. It tricks me into thinking I'm having a real pancake...Tastes good. I also have some other snack recipes for the whey protein, but I'll have to get back to you on those. Have a good New Year. Stay strong!

I do a lot of protein smoothies/shakes in the summer months. It get cold too easily to do them in the summer. I use Jillian Michael's Pure Protein brand of Whey Protein -- vanilla cream flavor. I do it in the blender with ice, 1-1/2 cups of unsweetened almond milk and a couple Tbsp of heavy cream. I then add flavors. I use a lot of the sugar-free coffee syrups, Crystal light individual packets, Hershey's Special Dark and low carb berries for flavoring. For example my base with 1 tbsp of cocoa and a shot of frech vanilla coffee syrup (or caramel is yummy too) or a packet of orange flavored crystal light and a shot of vanilla syrup, or a shot of peach syrup and 2-3 strawberries. Anyway, they usually average 6-8 net carbs each (the whey protein is 4 nc) and they replace a meal for me and keep me full.

proofing would have been good -- I don't do them in the winter because I get too cold too easily.

Fallonpie - Thanks for that - I really will have to try that recipe!

Add some pb2 if you have it or peanut butter. What ingredients did you buy? I just drink straight protein, but I can't handle whey. Paradise Farms has a nice Protein & Greens drink called Orac Energy.

Gigi - Think I need to go back to the store to get more supplies! And they are sooo cold. I had to run put on my fuzzy slippers - LOL.

Rocky - Oh, yes, chocolate will definitely be included in my next experiment - yum!

Heather - I bought an unsweetened soy protein (Puritan's Pride brand) but this may have been a mistake because I can taste the soy - kind of like baby formula! Haven't tried the whey yet (didn't like the sound of it). Guess I had better venture out to GNC to see if they have Orac Energy and find out what else is available. Thanks again.

Hmmm, interesting. Funny you didn't like the sound of whey. I do know what you mean. Whey is a staple amongst weightlifters, great for muscle, not so great for those lactose intolerant. I have so many proteins I like. SunWarrior is a vegan protein I like, as is Olmpia Labs pea protein. If you need fibre, raw protein from Garden of Life is amazing in all flavours (chocolate has most fibre). But that one is a little expensive. My health food store sells it 2 for 1. Can't beat that. Other than the 2 for 1 sales, I buy mine at vitacost.com. They have pretty good prices. Can't wait to see what you whip up. There's certainly no harm sweetening the unsweetened ones. I prefer that, so that I can use my choice of sweetener.

I like the unsweetened Spiru-tein (4 carbs) so you can add own sweetener. I usually make with water, ice cubes, brewed coffee, splenda. I like getting the spirulina in there. Can add a TBSP of heavy cream if you want more creamy. You can find at Vitacost or Netrition websites.

Heather - I appreciate you letting me know about the lactose intolerant part (my body will only "tolerate" a limited amount of lactose - LOL). Nice to know there are so many choices. Thanks again!

Elizabeth - Oh a coffee protein shake! Now we are talking!

So much good info from all of you -- thanks! The raw food/health food store where I go also recommended SunWarrior vegan proteins. And they suggested adding coconut oil to smoothies to help with sugar cravings, weight management, metabolism. I'm experimenting with that too, but put it in my oatmeal this morning & it was yummy... although after a 5-day cleanse, anything solid & warm might have tasted good! Good luck, my friend, & let us know what great smoothie recipes you come up with! xoxox

Ruhu - I have put the brakes on my smoothie experiment until I can get another source of protein. Whatever I put into it the horrible soy taste comes through. As for coconut oil - I have no idea how I ever lived without it! And now when I get the container out, the dog will even beg for a spoonful.

Ooh, I like the coffee protein shake idea too!! Will have to write that one down. My favorite is peanut butter, banana, vanilla protein powder, and ice. Yum. :)

Erika - Can't go wrong with that combination!
12 Jan 13 by member: BuffyBear
Absolutely not! And frozen bananas give it an ice-cream like consistency... Mmmm..

BuffyBear, how do use the coconut oil?

I have protein powder too, but I make awesome pancakes & it is also in lots of low carb dessert recipes. Never been much of a smoothie-girl, I thought they all had yogurt, which is on my yuckie list!
