I'm a 53 year old mother of 2 boys who are both away at college. I was overweight as a child and struggled with binging in my twenties. After getting married & having my sons, my weight seemed to stabilize until recently. I started craving sugar horribly (possibly a part of menopause) & tried giving it up completely several times which seemed to lead to binging again on it. I then tried Atkins & Slim Fast, but realized eating healthy whole foods works best for me, at least for now. I have been at about 120 pounds for years, give or take a few, but seem to be averaging closer to 125 now. I'd love to get back to 120, but am realizing that as I age, that may be unrealistic. I'm an avid tennis player & workout most days that I don't play tennis. I know it's weird but I actually like to workout. I'm so happy to have found great support here on fatsecret.

Desserts
I choose to go cold turkey off added sugar & while I've had my lapses, I've felt much better off sugar & now satisfy my sweet tooth with fresh fruit. it's been amazing to me how sweet fruit tastes after giving up added sugars for a while. I also occasionally have dark chocolate (80% or higher) & unsweetened coconut.

Sugar question
I also try to limit & be aware of the sugar I eat. You may already know this, but items are listed on the ingredients list in the order of most to least, so if its way (or should I say weigh - LOL) down on the list, there is a much lower percentage of it in the food. Also, I have a friend who is a health coach who has been helping me, & she says to also pay attention to the sugar grams compared to the fiber grams on the nutritional label, and to keep the difference between the two to 10 grams or less. And, finally, I'm realizing that I need to stay away from artificial sweeteners too, which don't show up as sugar grams but are listed in the ingredients list. It's not easy, but gets easier over time! Hope this helps!

Weekend
I struggle more on the weekend too & similarly find it best to be sure to plan out & log my meals. If we're eating out, I check the restaurant's web site so I can decide ahead what to order. And, I always try to get in some exercise & to get outdoors weather permitting. Also, there's a great group that I belong to here on FS called Operation Weekend Watch where we all struggle on the weekends & post there throughout the weekends to motivate each other -- it's really helped me! Check it out -- we'd love to have you!

Slim Fast
I've used them too in the past, but was also shocked at how much sugar is in them so used other protein powders without all that sugar now instead. I also find that when you make them yourself (instead of the already made, canned ones), you can add other filling ingredients like fruit, veggies, ice, etc.

Binge Eating Monster
Have to add my praise, admiration & thank you for this great post! I, too, am right with you as a sugar addict who is finally finding her way on her own personal journey -- a journey that started to lose weight but has become so much more as a healthy eating & living adventure.

My journey took me through a series of what I've been calling experiments -- an elimination diet which exposed intolerances for gluten & lactose, and an addiction to sugar. After eliminating them all for the past 3 months (& as you wisely point out), eventually my sugar cravings got the best of me resulting in a sugar binge. So, I now allow myself a sugar treat (one portion) every 2-3 weeks which I plan for, look forward to, eat mindfully and make the "guest of honor" at my meal.

I'm a big believer, too, to take it one day at a time or in my case, sometimes, one meal or one moment or one bite or one emotion. I'm currently reading about emotional eating & looking at how that factors into my cravings. I'm a work in process, also eager to hear & share healthy eating and living stories. (If anyone wants to stay in touch, please buddy request me as I'd love to.) Thanks again for your post!
