HCB's Journal, 01 November 2012

Happy November, Buddies. October ended up as a good month for weight loss - 7.6 pounds gone! My goal was to lose six, so I got a little ahead of plan. Of course, last night's carb bonanza probably doesn't help November's plan!

My DH decided he wanted Italian food to celebrate our Anniversary! Being a crazy Italian originally from the East Coast, I was not complaining!

It had been over six months since I had eaten pasta of any type.

I opted to skip the appetizer, cocktails or wine - Thanks Evelyn64 for the tip! I did eat lots of garlic bread, a small portion of pasta with seafood and four ravioli in marinara sauce. Dessert was 1/4 serving of a gigantic piece of chocolate cake and coffee!

The leftover ravioli and cake immediately went in the FREEZER to reduce any temptation to extend the "celebration." I figure I can have it sometime in December around the holidays if I reach my weight loss goal for the month...or not.

It certainly was a strange feeling to be eating all the "forbidden" foods. Did I eat uncontrollably? Did I feel guilt? Was it as good as I remembered? Was it worth it?

I did not feel guilt exactly; but worried once I let the carb monster out, it would be hard to stop. The bread was eaten with reckless abandon - but the rest was moderate. I stopped when I was full. The cake was a "treat" motivated by DH - he seldom eats dessert but he said it was a "special" day.

As I said earlier, celebrating with food is not my favorite choice - but it IS what we all are used to doing. We are going to a play on Saturday at the Guthrie Theater - that is more of how I like to celebrate and reward myself.

So, my buddy djburney said I never log a gain on my weight history - I am judicious about the "Idiot Box" - I ain't weighing myself today! LOL

Since most of us here are living in the "real world", we will have celebrations that revolve around food. By you stopping eating when you were full and putting the leftovers into the freezer it sounds like you handled the situation well.

Sounds like you had a great time and made great choices. At least you got to kill 2 birds with one stone - Halloween treats with Anniversary special treats! Now let's make it through Thanksgiving.

I'm glad my little tip helped you at the restaurant :) I don't like celebrating with food, either, but it's so ingrained into our customs and cultures that's it's hard to break those traditions. Learning to deal with them better than we did before is about the best we can do sometimes. I think you did well - you chose your favorites and didn't stuff yourself beyond being full. Stick the idiot box in a dark corner in the basement for a day or two - show it who's boss! LOL.

Good for you. Glad to see you splurged a bit but you stayed in control too. And to end the month on a happy note, you lost 7.6 lbs, that's a huge goal! Congrats.

LOL -- I don't record gains either -- just losses. If there is a slight gain, I just keep on going til there is better news to report. COngrats on such a good month and your Anniversary too -- dinner sounded wonderful :)

I'm glad you celebrated. Great job on freezing the left overs. I think it is great you stopped when you got full. I'm going to try and remember this for my anniversary in 20 days. =)

It's true our culture celebrates with food...can anyone point to a time in our history when we did not? The difference, IMHO, is what we do for a living now, topped off by how we spend our spare time, of which there is an abundance in this age of technology...I think celebrating with food is taking a pretty harsh and (mostly) undeserved beating these days. The key is moderation. We can no longer celebrate to the extent we once could (I'm speaking of the country as a whole) if we no longer physically work as hard as we once did...again, moderation is the key. I'm glad you indulged on your special day, HCB. I know you will more than make up for it with plenty of hard "work" in the days to come :-) NO MORE GUILT :-)

Happy Anniversay!! I eat pasta every couple of months and only about a cup. Amazes me on how I get full on so little now and I make sure it's with protein. I give a little and to be honest don't really care about it again for quite some time. Usually when the hubby begs to go to his fav Italian place lol. I do the whole bring me a take home box immediately thing. Put away what I know I shouldn't be eating and make sure the hubby eats it the next day :-). Hate that he can still eat almost anything and not gain!

It's sounds like you were able to use moderation and made some very mindful choices (nixing apps and drinks) that's so great! Glad you had a great anny!!

What a wonderful anniversary celebration you and your DH had. Your restraint was great (except for the bread) but that is my "no, no", not yours. My hubby wanted to do Italian for our anniversary too but we wound up eating in a steakhouse, so that worked out for me better. Smiling at your not weighing in. You are too cute. Have a great day. Hugs!

Guilt free celebrations are the best HCB - as long as you are straight back on track they have very little effect to your weightloss - go you!!
