kingkeld's Journal, 02 February 2012

First of all, if you didn't read my journal from yesterday AFTER all the comments were added, go back and check them out. There are SO many "moving" comments there, it just made me laugh so hard reading it this morning. Thanks guys, for making me laugh. I needed it.

Why did I need it, you ask? Well, I gained weight again. I know why, too.

Yesterday was a rough day on me for several reasons.

First of all, I slept HORRIBLE. It was so bad that I decided to throw the towel in the ring around noon and go home from work. Long live comp time, though it was a shame to waste it on that. I needed it though, I had absolutely no energy.

I called wife, and we met at the local pizza place for a chicken salad. I did great on this, no trouble. No dressing either. :)

After this, we went shopping, I found some 99 calorie snack bars for work. They are great when you feel that you need a little something. I also bought some protein powder for my morning shake, which I will try to do daily for a while and see if that changes anything for me.

I bought my treasured low cal ice cream, and temptation came and FORCED me to buy chocolate. It was a large one too. Don't worry, I got rid of it. Trouble it, I got rid of it by EATING it. Stupid 1200 calories completely unnecessary. Oh, how I regret this today. Oh well. I need to move on.

Today, I feel rested. I SLEPT LIKE A ROCK!

Today, however, I am back UP above 80 kgs. I do NOT want to be here. I want to get back to the 77, and a little further. I need this. I have to do this.

Wife is gaining a little too. I think we have both been a little too casual about things, and we had a little talk about it today. No more slacking. I still have a goal in April, and I don't want to stray so far from the path that I can't get there in time.

I don't really think it's me upping my calories to 1800 that is the culprit. I work out quite a lot these days, and that shouldn't do it. It's me eating bad things and generally snacking on the wrong things that does it to me.

So, for the next week or two, I have decided that I will try out the new shakes (which I will get back to in a moment) instead of ice cream. I will also NOT do other dumb things. I will, however, maintain my Indulgence Day on Saturdays, but be a little more strict on my intake and only go to the limit as I'm supposed to. It's really not hard, I just need the focus.

So, how's my stomach, you ask? It's a lot better! I think the prunes and the psyllium husk really helped. I feel a LOT better, and a lot more comfortable. I'm actually surprised I didn't lose a pound or two! lol.

So, about the shake... I experimented a little yesterday with doing my meal shake. I made it like an "exlax" version, but I'm thinking I can do things a little different than that, and watch out on the calories.

Yesterday, my shake in the morning consisted of:

- 5 ice cubes
- 200 ml 1.5% milk (what we had available at home)
- 5 prunes
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon sweetener

This shake was amazingly fulfilling. It tasted great! However, it was also IMO a little high on calories.

Currently, I think I'll keep going with the prunes, but I kinda want to separate them from the shake, as I don't think it matters too much. AND at the same time I want to incorporate the protein powder.

The shake really fills me up - after drinking them I feel STUFFED, which is a great thing. I want to try to do one right before I go to work, to keep me from snacking all morning. That's the mission today. Also, I want to make it healthier. I will start with simply doing it with the protein powder, the milk and the ice cubes. I'll see how that tastes, and go from there. I'm not too picky on flavors, so if this is good, then I'll simply go with that.

I wonder if I can shove one of these in the freezer and make it into an ice cream? They almost have the consistency already... This way I could replace my evening ice creams with this. That would be awesome, and a LOT cheaper. I think I'll make a bonus one and shove it in the freezer, and see how it comes out. I can always modify it, if needed. Let's see what happens.

So what's the game plan for today? Nothing much, really. I kind of have a game plan of hitting the gym, but I'm not sure I'm gonna do it. It's my long work day, so I am not out until 5 pm. Then, if I go to the gym, I won't be home until 7 pm, and I don't really see that happening. It'll have to be tomorrow that the gym will be taking a beating from me.

Wife is having her first meeting with the physiotherapist this morning. I'm curious to see how it goes.

Today, I am thankful for
- making the decision to do better! It will happen!
- wife getting up with me, and keeping me company.
- COFFEE! I need it, though I slept like a ROCK!
- The outlook of a good morning protein shake. I really liked the one I did yesterday. I am curious how it will come out without the cocoa and without the sweetener or prunes. If it's still good, I'll save 140 calories on that.
- my tummy being a LOT better! Phew.

Life is good!

Hang in there Kingkeld! I think there is a natural cycle, kind of like the womenfolk, but maybe more long term (longer than monthly). Kind of like biorhythms. Anyway, dont beat yourself up, as we discussed the journey can get monotonous sometimes and we need that deviation. I think, err, I KNOW it happens to us all. I like the idea of prunes in a shake. I need to incorporate prunes, my wife and I are "into" fiber, lol.

I loved your typo... "tubby" instead of "tummy". I assume that was accidental? =P
02 Feb 12 by member: ferlengheti
LOL, yeah, that was accidental. I took the liberty of correcting it. I gotta admit - I type and send. I very rarely proof read. :)

It was funny! =)

Ok, focus grasshopper!!! You can do it, poor little chocolate bar isn't going to destroy the big bad kingkeld now, is it?!!!

Oooops.... You are right to get back into being stricter. It's to easy to "let go" of things and slip back into old habits. I am sure you and wife will get back to a routine. While reading your journal, it really came home to me how hard maintenance is.... It's got to always be in your mind - it also occurred to me, that this may be even more difficult once you've had your op. What target will you have then..... I find it a little scary.
02 Feb 12 by member: Sk1nnyfuture
SkInny - the target after surgery will be below 77. That's the "normal" weight, and that's where I'd like to be. I figure I'll generally be a tad lower, and once I get up to 77, then I need to claw my way back down if necessary. I will however ignore day to day weigh-in fluctuations, and go with a weekly average instead. I think it's mentally healthier than to panic every day I am above 77. If it looks like it's becoming a consistant 77, then I need to do something. If it's a fluke, then I'll just cope with it and keep doing good. :)

this is one of the things i still have to learn (a bit more)....that i don't panic when the scale shows me a higher number than the day before... there are days i really don't care...and days when i kinda PANIC when i see it...

Throw in a banana! Maybe vanilla w strawberries or raspberries? Some greek yogurt for extra protein? let me know how the freezer part goes- My kids mite be fooled! :) BTW dont stress the chocolate bar, we are still regular people, who can eat a chocolate bar occasionally if we choose to. Enjoy life, and take the stairs! :)

I agree about the banana - I make a breakfast smoothie daily with skim milk, chocolate protein powder, 3/4 small frozen banana. I add about a half tablespoon of flax oil too for omega 3s. It's very good - feels like a cheat shake :)

I like to "keep" my calories for a little later in the day, as I also eat eggs and bread for breakfast. I'm kinda like the hobbits, eating both breakfast and 2nd breakfast. I wake up at 4:30, so it's a LONG morning until lunch time. I'm contemplating skipping half my morning rye bread and move those calories to my shake. I gotta experiment a little and see what I end up doing. It's all a matter of the two breakfasts, the fullness I'll feel from them and the calories spent. It all has to work out.

can you freeze bananas? It may be a silly question but ...Do you skin them first?
02 Feb 12 by member: Sk1nnyfuture
too funny Kingkeld! Glad you're having 'movements' ! I regularly add dried prunes to my porridge, or snack on 2 or 3 of them; natural booster for #2!

@skinny - yes, bananas freeze very well, but I think they have limited use once frozen. I always use them in protein shakes - instead of ice. They get really mushy if you try to thaw them after freezing so I have never attempted to thaw them to use them in any other manner besides shakes once they have been frozen. I peel them before freezing.

Thanks Sunrise.... Great idea. I do buy bananas, but there are always a couple, that end up going "too far". Or I only want half, to have with yoghurt or shake. I stopped buying them recently, because they ripe too quickly. I shall re-start and give the freezing a go :-)

If you have frozen bananas you can blend them in the blender and eat as "icecream" similar consistency as softserve icecream I find.

Stir your ice cream once or twice before it's ready to break up the ice crystals, I'm sure it will be awesome!

Have you tried the protein powder by itself yet, before in the shake? If you mix it in with some water or milk, you might get a good idea of what the taste is and whether you'll be okay or need more flavor. Other than that, smoothies are great for experimenting! I saw a blog the other day where the girl made a rainbow with smoothies. Like for the color red, strawberries, orange juice, raspberries, etc.. it was really interesting seeing all these smoothies that she concocted based on the colors of the ingredients. And beautiful! Glad to see you're feeling better, though, I know I've been breaking my own rules a bit lately too.. it happens! I'm sure things will get easier for you. Best of luck!

King, so glad that things are "moving" in the right direction for you. ;) Things are finally "moving" right along here also! lol Your plan sounds like a good one...the weight will come back down in a matter of days, but of course you already know that. :) Have a great day!
