HCB's Journal, 23 August 2012

I just read an article about mindful and conscious eating. It discusses the need for each of us to recognize true hunger rather than eating without thought, out of habit, because of emotional upsets, or beyond the point of feeling full.

The article suggests you can practice recognizing physiological hunger by following these steps before you eat:

- Stop
- Close your eyes
- Take 3-5 deep breaths
- Place hands on your abdomen and focus on your internal stomach pouch
- Notice
- Ask yourself - Where is my hunger? What is my hunger?
Am I full? How full am I?

Last night we went to dinner, and today went to lunch. I ordered main dish green salads for both meals while resisting some of my favorite foods: pizza, french fries, burgers with the bun, etc.

Today I am grateful for:

- I am now on vacation until September 5th!
- My drive snd commitment to stay on track with food plan
- My FS Buddies who support and encourage me to continue
- "Butt-kicking" myself to a smaller size today
- My DH - who is my greatest "cheerleader"
- My Bengal cat companions named Bodhi and Ravi
- My work - which has meaning and worth to other human beings
- My connection to the Mother Earth and its entire splendor
- My physical health

Mindful and conscious eating was probably one of the hardest things to learn, and I am pretty sure I still have not mastered it. I think it is a common struggle in America as we see food as a social thing rather than the fuel that it should be. Good post.

I agree! It took me more than a month to figure out what real hunger meant for me, rather than my mouth just being bored. I know a lot of diets tell people to avoid being hungry, but I disagree to a point--it is very helpful to know the difference between needing fuel in your body or simply being a bit peckish.

Your journal came too late for me. I am alone for the evening and just ate my dinner while on the phone with my Sister - remind me never to do that again.

Interesting point, Heidi. I still remember my Microbiology prof saying in her best Edith Bunker voice, that it's good to always be a little bit hungry.

Conscious eating is what I've been doing for a couple of months now. I think it was easier to get into because I had already overhauled my lifestyle and food preferences. I don't measure or count anything and I'm still losing weight. Of course, the weight training is helping with the weight loss. But I totally endorse it as the way to go that you can live with for the rest of your life!

I have found herbal tea..iced or hot...to be the perfect antidote to those times when I am only slightly hungry, or just bored. enjoy the company and change in scenery!

My journal entry two days ago was about mindful eating; great minds think alike, eh? Actually, it's a great topic and it sounds like it was a good article. It sounds like you did a great job making mindful food choices in very distracting situations ; cool!
