I am a Martial arts practitioner how has been pretty rough on his body over the years. Partied, smoked and drank way to much. I started my reform 6 months ago after looking at my kids thinking I was never going to see my grand kids at this pace. I have quit smoking (7 months now), cut down to a beer or two a month. Now I am working on the dreaded soda to stop.

I quit smoking October 28th and shot up to 225 pounds. Slowly but surely I have worked it back down.

Controversial Topic: What Causes Obesity?
Many things combine to cause obesity. Many of the *preservatives* and *chemicals* we use in food are also being found to cause problems. A balanced diet without overeating so eating for your level of activity. My favorite thought is my sister who is not overweight but will go on a soda blackout every once in a while. When she stops drinking diet soda (0 Calories) she loses 10 pounds in 2 weeks. But she drinks coffee instead so we know it is not the caffeine. Makes you really wonder what that carbonic acid and sweeteners are doing to you.

I firmly believe 90% of maintaining/losing weight is diet. You can eat 4000 calories in 20 minutes. Try and burn that above and beyond your normal requirements in a day. Good Luck!

Protein Shakes?
Greek Yogurt is great too. 12-14 grams of protein and fairly good taste.

Usage for me varies. On days I lift weights I have one before and one after and sometimes right before bed. But I am not actively trying to lose a lot of weight. I am trying to get back in shape and get stronger.

should i or should i not
I have seen the p90x videos, and keep in mind it is your pace. Yes Tony dances around and tells you to GO GO GO, but if you have to start and do 1 rep for their 2 or 3 reps then you are still working. Eventually you can move up and keep up to their pace. If you are worn out in the first 10 minutes so be it. Try to do 11 next time. It is about progression and slowly getting better, be it whatever poison (program) you pick.

Which type of excercise WON'T you do at the gym?
Simple things to remember:
1. The bodybuilder was small some time too.
2. it is not a contest, ignore their size and strength. Most bodybuilders or strength trainers have a bit more respect for the person that is not afraid to come move some iron no matter their size.
3. machines for weightlifting are good. But free weights engage stabilizing muscles that machines do not. It works more and makes your joints more stable.
4. If you have balance problems, drop the amount of weight, SLOW DOWN and learn to balance. No exercise is worth the pulled muscle from *slipping* and putting you out of the gym for the time to heal.
5. ALL exercises are good. Doing anything will help you get in shape. the broader your exercise arsenal the better shape you will get into.

/me steps down from soap box/ You guys and gals rock! So glad I found this community.
