So today I need to vent:
For the past 8 weeks or so I have been working out with weights and really pushing myself to do the best that I can. For the first 6 weeks I had a personal trainer 3x a week for an hour. So now I totally understand about building muscles and form. Unfortunately, I still am overweight and I look like I have a beer gut~ Because I was feeling stronger and I thought I was looking better some idiot has to ruin it. I took a boxing class for the first time and the trainer was so nasty to me I almost wanted to slit my wrists and was in a deep depression for 2 days afterwards. Before the boxing class began I had told him that I have been working out with a trainer for the past 6 weeks and he said to me apparently it isn't working! and then said have you taken a look in the mirror lately? And then said that I was in denial! He asked what i was eating and I told him pretty much a healthy diet and he said there is no way you are eating healthy with the way you look! I swear I wanted to die! Do all people overweight get treated like this?? or is it just me?? it's extremely painful when I get treated this way especially when i work out so hard and I really have a healthy lifestyle or at least trying to have one and people assume something else just by looking at me....sigh

Hi Fatfreeme - there as @$$holes in every profession. You just happened to run into one at a bad time. You have to tell yourself that this guy is just a jerk and for whatever reason he felt like it was ok to talk to you that way. You know you are making improvements in your life and you have to have faith in yourself - not this toolbar of guy.

You know, this makes me REALLY angry! I have known many a slender person who eats like total CRAP. The only people who have ANY right whatsoever to question you about denial would be possibly a nutritionist, if you had been going to them for months or years and still weren't losing weight. Then, maybe, they might call you out on your journalling. Who the heck does that boxing instructor think he is? What he should have been saying is, "OK now, this class may use your muscles in a different way and you may feel awkward for the first couple weeks, but you'll get the hang of it. Congratulations on pursuing a healthier lifestyle!"

Clearly that dude needs to go into another profession! I never comment on any post but this makes me so mad! You keep making your better choices and don't beat yourself up!!! Are you feeling better? Do each of your goals that you make for yourself and meet bring you satisfaction? Then great! Keep up the awesome work!! Man alive...

Listen, that guy was a total jerk!! You just keep working, don't let that fool discourage you in any way. In fact use this as motivation to stay consistant with your work. It will pay off in the long run. Persistence, faithfulness and consistency will win this battle for you! I always say "let my haters be my motivators"!

Thank you!! Supportive comments mean a lot at this time!! I just can't get over how mean people can be. Or I should say MEN! It isn't woman that say things to me. It's the men!! But i should remember, even when I was 125 pounds I remember a guy saying he thought I was heavy because I'm short and so I appear heavy. Blah..I have to work on having a thick skin...oops i already have that LOL... I mean I need to work on not being so sensitive I guess...

Hopefully you will not have to deal with him again; I agree with Alex - I would report the issue to the facility management. Good luck with your fitness program; it is worth every minute you spend doing it!

Unfortunately, He is the OWNER!!!!! The only recourse was to give a bad review on Yelp. He did apologize to me after the workout saying he had a bad morning. But STILL!!! that fact of the matter is the damage had already been done because I already internalized it. When he was making me do the situps he pressed on my stomach and said " You couldn't possibly like yourself naked with this belly" I was in so much shock on how he was speaking to me I didn't know how to react in the moment. I wanted to cry but instead I got angry and it made me get through the boxing until afterwards when I went into a severe depression for a few days...

Time to find another gym and or trainer.

It isn't just you, and it isn't even trainers and people on the street. When I was 13, I started having pains in my side, about every other month. My doctor said "Lose weight, that's all that's wrong with you." The pains continued until I was almost 16, when my mother got disgusted and took me to the emergency room. After some tests, they performed surgery on me and removed a large ovarian cyst, the size and shape of a loaf of French bread and weighing over 20 lbs., which was wrapped around my left ovary. After I got out of the hospital, my mom took me back to this turkey to have the wound checked. While I was lying on the examination table, I pushed my stomach up a little to expose the lower part of the wound. The doctor said "That's right, push all that fat out of the way"! That cyst was filled with 2 years worth of menstrual blood and near bursting when they took it out; I could easily have died from peritonitis because of this jerk's incompetence, and he says that to me! This guy used to give candy out to kids that came to his office. When I was about 9, Mom took my sister and me for check-ups. She's the cute, beautiful blond, so she got a bag of M&M's. I held my hand out, and he said "Not you, you're going to start losing weight!" Thanks doc, I needed that. I went on my first diet at the age of 10; I was counting calories and doing pretty well, but Mom took me to him to see that I was doing it right. He put me on amphetamines, even though I didn't want to and told them so. The pills made me feel up and energetic the first few days, then they just gave me a headache. After all this my mother kept going to him. She was overweight too, and got the same constant abuse. She tried every diet and exercise trick in the book, and usually I was right behind her. She finally got an exercise machine that looked like a camping cot hinged in the middle. She was lying face down on it trying to fold and unfold (that's what it looked like the person exercising on it appeared to be doing), when she felt something crack in her back. Dr. G. told her the same old thing, "Your back hurts because you're fat, lose the weight and you'll be fine". Well, after 2 or 3 years of constant pain, she finally went to another doctor who x-rayed her and found a cracked vertebra. As far as I know, he never apologized to her for that any more than he did to me for almost letting me die, just because he couldn't see anything else if an overweight person came to him. Go back to that jackass of a trainer and tell him he doesn't know what you eat and you do, he doesn't know what you've been doing and you do, he's an incompetent idiot and you're going to find a REAL trainer instead of a thick-skulled, bigoted moron! And if you can't do it, give me his phone number!

If he's the owner then he needs a good talk. i would sit him down and explain how he made you feel. I would say " I don't care if you had a bad morning. this is YOUR job and YOUR job that you have chosen is all customer relations. You WILL lose customers with this attitude and treatment and you WILL lost income. It's YOUR choice to say these things and you will have to take responsibility. You are losing my business. How many other people have you lost this way? Grow up or get out."

I agree, time to find another gym, don't give that jerk any more of your money. He's the one with the problem not you. Get your anger and frustration about it out, then let it go and don't internalize it.

Wow I had no idea personal trainers could be so mean. I guess I don't get out much. I hope he never has a wife or child or sister or whatever that has weight issues or isn't "perfect" because he will be in for a rude awakening! You need to find a new trainer and pat yourself on the back for working so hard! We hear at FS are VERY proud of your commitment to lose weight and get healthy!

OMG I totally agree!! Find yourself a new trainer, different gym to attend. YOU are better than that we are all ppl and we ALL have feelings.. And yes all the skinny ppl treat overweight ppl like SHIT, literally but you don’t have to take it. Prove them wrong, we can do this and WILL succeed. So stick to it!! :-)

He wasn't my personal trainer it was just a boxing thing I found on Groupon it was my first day and last day there. Wow i thought it was just me!! so I guess this is just the way society is when you are not an ideal weight! I am so self conscious now that I went to the gym wearing sunglasses this morning! Lol i thought the sunglasses would make me invisible how pathetic. Now i am paranoid people are looking at me...grrrrr. I think I need a shrink...

I take offense to the "all the skinny people treat all the overweight people like shit" that is not true at all and it's a desservice to many many wonderful people out there. That's a horrible thing to say. there are shitty people of ALL sizes and shapes. that's all this guy is. A shitty person.

Actually Alex_is_Hawks~~ I agree with you~ I was thin my whole life and had the opposite problem (anorexia) and people used to say mean things to me all the time~ And would say why don't you eat you look like you left a concentration camp so I have been on both sides of the fence~ those comments hurt then but they hurt so much worse being overweight...but the thing is, most of the insults when i was thin came from woman...
