Ruhu's Journal, 27 March 2014

Yesterday was such a nice day, and reaffirmed how truly blessed I am. In addition to the amazing, wonderful, supportive, caring friends here on FS, I have 2 close IRL friends here in CT & 2 back home in Cincy. Having close friends has been my salvation always as I remember back to first moving away from "home" and how I struggled each time in our new location. The key was always making a friend or two who I truly wanted to be with. Sometimes that took longer than others, but when I have/had a special friend, life is/was good. After moving every few years early in our marriage, we've now been in this hone for 18 years. What i'm realizing now, is that some of the women I initially be-friended are not the best for me at this stage in my life. So, I'm finding my way, moving toward the healthy, good friendships and away from those less so.

And while I'm on the topic of relationships, have I told you lately, that mine with DH has really been slowly improving. I'm opening up more to him & he's responding & seems to be getting it! As many of you know, a big issue for me/us, has been our lack of good communication & our growing difference in how much we want to socialize. We had been going out with others at least once every weekend, and sometimes both nights and/or Sunday with MIL. Especially throughout the holidays, I experienced total burnout with too many parties & too much entertaining, too frequently. But, to his defense, DH, who can & would "go" all weekend long, didn't realize that I wasn't interested or happy at that pace anymore. The fun-loving party girl that he married was finally slowing down (as far as socializing) in her fifties. Until I finally had a heart-to-heart with him about how I felt & what I needed, he'd sometimes comment that I was becoming a party pooper or wasn't any fun anymore. But after calmly & sincerely telling him how I felt, he's now become so supportive & we're better discussing social plans in advance. Although we still communicate at times via email (which had been our main/sole form of communication in the past), we now are having more date nights & spending time as a couple, so the fun continues, just in a new way. And, as invites come in, he now regularly checks with me & either lets me decide or is open to discussion.

So, great cyber & IRL friends and a better, healthier, happier relationship with DH… again I'm blessed! Today, I'm off to another circuit workout later this morning, then a trip to the Apple Store to see if they can help technologically challenged me figure out how to share our photos between computers & my iPad, and why my email isn't syncing between my devices. But first, blessed me will start my day in prayer --

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

And throughout this one day, and each one meal, moment, bite, thought & emotion, I'll pray, breathe, log, post & express my way. I'm so very grateful for each of special you, my family & IRL friends, sunshine with low winds and warming temps, hot decaf coffee… bulletproof with coconut oil this morning, and having the health & wealth to live his life I love! xoxox

Lady, you got it going on :) I am SO happy for you that you are communicating more with DH - and - that he's responding and caring and taking it well. And that you have IRL friends you care about and who care about you. Your life is really good right now. Enjoy it to the fullest, which I know you do. Hugs my special girl. :) :)

Love this journal. Does DH still truly enjoy the endless parties or was he doing it because he thought you still did? Just a question from the nosy me. Communication is key. Good open discussions. Funny how we can get in habits for decades and not share where when we first 'meet' we share everything. It's like we forget people change as their age and situations change. Have a wonderful day. Sipping my hot BP alongside you.

Ruth - It warms my heart to read this. I am so happy that you are making your way. I do understand the moving and trying to find a couple of good friends. We have lived here near to 4-1/2 years and I still have not made one good IRL friend. I find sometimes that can make things a little lonely and tougher when you live away from all of your family. I am very happy that you have a couple of good ones and that communication has opened up for you and your DH. Sending warm hugs to you :)

I'm so happy that you and DH are continuing to bridge the communication gap and that he is making an effort to understand you and your feelings. That is a wonderful thing.

Sounds like you are both off and running to adapting your relationship to fit a slightly different lifestyle. Great that the communication is opening up.
