BadAndee's Journal, 07 May 2008

Whew! I survived the first day yesterday of NO non-dairy creamer! I used the HC, 2 tbsp per mug to be exact! That little tsp stuff just don’t cut it! Is that bad??? I like my coffee creamy, ya’ll! I don’t need sugar, but I do need the cream!

Those hidden carbs are proving to be yet another problem. MBHPRO casually mentioned how s/f gum had hidden carbs, and I’m glad she brought that up! I love GUM! Some days I eat about 3-4 pieces. I hurriedly ran to my stash and upon looking at the package, I see that each piece has 2 carbs! Great! Watch out for falling rocks! (that’s what I’m gonna call all those hidden carbs from now on! LOL)

I’m happy to say that when I checked for ketosis last night, I was showing a moderate level again, so the effects of my weekend are officially washed out of my system. I don’t think I’ll be acting up any time soon, either! I didn’t like how it made me feel at all! It certainly wasn’t worth it, in retrospect! I’m finding now that all I did was trade carbs for good health! It makes it easier to stay on track with that thought in mind!

For now, I’m going to work on drinking more water. I sweat buckets yesterday while at work, (it's so darn hot outside!) and I know already from past experience that I’m going to stall weight loss if I don’t start guzzlin’!!

I started re-reading parts of the Atkins book that a person usually won’t focus on, once they start the diet. One section in particular has to do with metabolically resistant people or those who stall in losing weight no matter how LOW the carb intake becomes. There are several reasons listed, but on page 230 of (Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution revised and updated), he goes on to explain what happens when a person is on prolonged dieting (regardless of what type of diet you follow). For those who don’t have the book, he talks about how dieting tends to shut down the thyroid function; the thyroid gland will test normal, but the liver fails to convert T4 into the more active thyroid principle, T3. the diagnosis is made by signs of fatigue, sluggishness, dry skin, coarse or falling hair, an elevation in cholesterol, or a low body temp below 97.8F Another possibility again circles back around to Aspartame sweetener (like ME with the gum!), and he suggests you switch your sweetener to see if weight loss resumes. Anyway, I thought that was an interesting section of the book!

The gum thing depresses me greatly...what about toothpaste??? It tastes sweet? How many hidden carbs don't get spat into the sink...huh? Anyway, your comment about stitches at 5 bucks a pop is hillarious! No my thumb is not that bad...I tend to exagerate...still stings like mad...no stitches, though.

Thanks for that reminder. I'll have to re-read that part of the Atkins book (again). I might re-read the whole thing just for kicks, anyway.

Back on track and ready to attack! I need to drink more water too! I know how you feel about the coffee, try using a little more and a packet of splenda in it, it's not too bad...not as good as my coffeemate vanilla caramel but it works!

Splenda has come up with flavored sugars for coffee and tea drinkers. You should look out for it. I saw it a couple of times in my local supermarket. Oh, and let me know how it tasted if you do get any!!

I like my coffee light too. I used to put one packet of sweet and low in each mug but I cut that back to 1/2 of a packet. It's good that you're getting back into ketosis so quickly! I'm still just showing a trace :(. I found some new 0 carb splenda powders today to put in bottled water. I'll list them in my journal. I'm really trying to cut back and eventually omit all aspartame from my diet. It's not easy because so many drinks have aspartame in it! Still looking for that cola sweetened with Splenda! Someone said that Pepsi One is flavored with Splenda so I'm going to check that out. Only thing is that it has caffeine it it. I do prefer Pepsi over Coke, but many times I'll buy the one that's on sale!! :)

I am also in the process of rereading the Atkins book. It's funny how we forget all those things once we are off and running! Good reminders! I am the same way with my coffee. I try to limit myself to one cup a day or else I'm consuming like a half gallon of cream - which can't be good no matter what diet I'm on!!!! I also indulge in the occassional breve latte.....

Girl, you know I like my coffee creamy. I'm cutting back though.. JUST one tbsp of hc, lol. If I don't measure, I'll pour in way too much!! I've been using splenda here and there, but I must be in control b/c I haven't gone over 3 pks a day since we started this whole induction thing, so that's good, right?? I'm drinking a glass of water too.. I've got to cut down on the diet mt. dew!! I think I drank a whole 2 liter from the am-pm last night!! So, the sugar alcohols in the gum doesn't take care of the carbs in the gum?? I had ask this question to someone else, but I'm guessing they didn't know since they never replied, lol.... I've tried to look it up and read on it but I just want a yes or no answer.. Oh well, I'm glad you're back girl!! Now.. let's see if we can get our times together, I feel like I keep missing you!! Have a good day!! =)

I didn't think that sugar alcohol cancelled out the carbs...I thought only fiber did that??! all I know is that it's not helping us...so no more gum for me....wwwwwhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
