I am a FS veteran. I am 5'7" tall and muscular. I had my first daughter in February 2010 and am now pregnant with my second child. I am doing the Brewer Pregnancy diet which is not a weight loss diet, but a minimum intake diet. I've been on FS since way before my pregnancies. I have had to work hard all of my life to get to a healthy weight. I have high metabolic resistance and I strive to make the right choices every day. I also had major surgery in November 2011 which has also set me back quite a bit. I have some health issues that impede my weight loss and have to take medications that are counterproductive to weight loss. I just want to have as healthy a pregnancy as possible, avoid excessive weight gain and any other complications.

My main focus is on health. I am doing a whole-foods diet and I eat gluten-free and soy-free and I limit my dairy. By eliminating foods that I had sensitivities to I greatly improved my health. By eliminating refined carbs I reduced my cholesterol and body fat percentage before I got pregnant the first time. I am here for record keeping because it is the only way that works for me. With the above restrictions I try to stay in my recommended RDI according to my primary doctor and OB.

I love to read and my favorite diet and nutrition books are: "Patient Heal Thyself" and "Restoring Your Digestive Health" by Jordan Rubin; "The Body Ecology Diet" by Donna Gates; "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes; "The Cortisol Connection" by Shawn Talbott; "The South Beach Diet" by Dr. Arthur Agatston; "The Fat Flush Plan" by Ann Louise Gittleman; and "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon.

I love to read and discuss the latest research. Message me any time.

Do I Really Burn That Much?
I use this RDI calculator http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

It even calculates a 7-day zig zag (rotation) calorie plan for you. If you subtract 1500 from the FS totals instead of 1000, it is more accurate to your weight loss needs. At least it seems to be working for me and it agrees with the above RDI calculator and my doctor's recommendations. Smile

Muscle Loss-- considering Metabolic Diet
I forgot to mention that if you choose to carb cycle, you might benefit from doing the higher carb-loading on days that you DO exercise so you burn the carbs instead of really "load" them on. KWIM?

Tips for quick workouts
Honestly, I have been trying to work in cardio for two years now and I am a SAHM. I don't live in a safe neighborhood and getting people to walk with us was hard. Walking just does not raise my heart rate enough, even when pushing a stroller. I finally broke down and bought an elliptical (saved up for it). It is cheaper than a year at any local gym and I do it during her nap time. I get on it an hour a day now.

My husband gets on it when we put her to bed at 8pm and he works all day. He didn't want to go to a gym after work either because he wants to spend time with us after working all day. It is hard for him but he can pound out at least 2 miles on it in 30 minutes.

We got a Schwinn A40 through walmart.com. With site to store you don't have to pay shipping.

Muscle Loss-- considering Metabolic Diet
I actually put on muscle quite easily on Atkins. A few years ago (pre-baby) I lost 17% body fat (and 2 dress sizes) but only 5% of my weight in 3 months doing strict Atkins and exercising regularly (cardio 5x/wk and weights 3x/wk). I actually have high metabolic resistance. I didn't have any problems with energy level, but I found I did have to eat many small meals in order to keep my energy level up. Hunger was no longer the signal of needing to eat due to ketosis.

If I ate about 200 calories of protein and fat about 30-60 minutes before my 1-2 hour long workout sessions, I was fine. Once you get to maintenance and you don't have fat on your body to burn any more, of course you have to fuel your body with some pre-workout carbs, but while you have fat to burn, if you are in ketosis you should be easily burning the fat on your body. If you only eat enough carbs that you burn in your workout then theoretically you could stay in ketosis, or at least return to it quickly.

To the person who tried Atkins for 2 weeks and said they had no energy, it was probably because you were still detoxing from carbs. It also took me a while to get to a stable eating regimen on Atkins because it took me a while to realize that I needed to eat more often when I no longer felt hunger. Doing a diet for 2 weeks does not provide an accurate example.
