Starting a diet this close to the holidays seems a bit crazy - but even if I can maintain my weight it will be better than my typical 5-8 pound holiday weight gain.

That's a good attitude to have. Its not crazy at all to start dieting this close to the holidays. You have to start somewhere. This way you get a head start on sticking with a new's years resolution.
