GLAMMER's Journal, 12 March 2014

First I want to say I'm enjoying connecting with others who are battling with weight loss here on FS. I plugged in the info they needed to determine my daily calorie needs, & it said I need 1900 cal's. If I ate that many cal's, I'd start gaining, not losing, because I'm very sedentary. So I try to stay under 1500 a day & that works fine for me so far, to lose 1-2 lbs per week. Has anyone else found that the daily calories they estimate on here are higher than you need to lose weight?

Here is some more about my health issues. I hope this info isn't too boring, or distressing, etc. for anyone, but I'm mostly posting these details to help myself see where I've been, where I am now, & where I need to go next.
As I've said before, I have OA in most joints due to a genetic collagen defect.
I've lived with ortho problems & being very obese nearly all my life, so I'm quite used to it. I finally found out WHY I've always been so different from others, & seemingly unable to do much about it, at least it feels better knowing my pain has a name. I now know it is called "Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome", & affects only about 1 in 50,000 people, & is very hard to get a clinical diagnosis for it, as it mostly damages cartilage & soft tissue which rarely show up on X-Rays. Also there are many "types" or categories for it, & the symptoms often overlap between the types. I was told I was type 2 or 3, but now they've found I have a couple of minor heart defects, which moved me to type 4. It's confusing I know, & scary for me, as now, besides my current left hip pain, the O A in my wrists, elbows & shoulders is getting worse limiting my mobility even more. I recently had 6 Physical Therapy sessions in the pool, & my Dr is requesting insurance approval for more. I expect my left hip replacement will happen this coming Fall-Winter, as I'll have lost the 25 lbs the Dr requires by mid-July, then he'll likely set the surgery date for about 2-3 months after my July visit. I need to get stronger in prep for that & right now I exercycle for 15 minutes a day & do a few PT exercises, & that's all I can manage right now due to the left hip pain. It is also waking me up, &/or keeping me awake at night in spite of fairly strong meds, & I often apply heated rice bags to the hip & lower back. I can do much more in the therapy pool, so hope they'll soon approve more PT.
Today I'm feeling pretty well, went with Hubby to town for some errands & to get our taxes done. Now I need to get busy recording my food data for dinner last night & breakfast & lunch today. Tracking my food is helping more than I expected, so I'll keep it up even though it's a pain in the butt, LOL. See y'all later! :)

YES!!! I think the calories allotted are too high and the exercise also credits me with too much net loss. I track my exercise but don't put full faith in what I see. I just bought a Fitbit on eBay and am looking forward to trying it and seeing what it tells me.

Wow, I hear ya, Glammer. I got JRA (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) when I was 18 and had it through my 20s with high fevers and terrible joint inflammation all over that made me cry and kept me from doing anything. I spent too much time in the hospital. It even affected my internal organs. And after all the cortisone, they found cataracts in both my eyes. The only treatment then was cortisone and gold shots. It was awful. I came through it eventually and began to run, but I also put on weight after stopping diet pills, so I injured my knees so I had to stop running and gained a ton of weight. I've been battling weight loss for too long. Now that I've learned how to take control of my calorie intake, I'm really excited about the weight loss I've managed so far. I discovered I don't even need to exercise to lose weight, but since I can exercise now, I do. I just wanted you to know that I support you and so many of us here on FS struggle(d) with health issues. It gets frustrating, but with patience and long-term goals things get better. They really do.

Yes they put me at 3800 calories and I try to stay between 1500 to 1800 calories and so far that is working for me. I have lost 31 lbs since Jan. 6

YES! It always says I need way more calories than works to lose weight! I always put in at least 500 cals less than FS recommends. Now, my Withings Scale and website have computed my RDI, and it is at 1203, and 1200 is where I have always thought my weight loss amount should be! I was glad to have better confirmation for myself. It is funny the relief we feel when we finally get a "diagnosis" to explain why we have our heath problems! You definitely have a lot going on. Glad your doc is working to help you get PT sessions, that will undoubtedly help. Good luck!

Yes they do estimate too high. I used a formula that my husband had found somewhere. You take your ultimate goal weight (for me that is 160 lbs) 160 times 10. That is the calories you should shoot for or below to lose weight. It has worked for me most of the time. I started at 294 lbs last April and right now I weigh 246 lbs. A woman should not eat less than 1200 calories a day for too many days in a row or you may put your body into starvation mode where it will hang onto every bit to keep you from starving. Hope that helps. Just what worked for me...everyone is different though...

Hey hey, Glam!!! You are so right about the calories on here. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they are right. However, I will say that as people get into maintenance (folks like our friend NorthernMusician and KingKeld) it seems they can get the calories right up there to those big numbers (and sometimes higher) and maintain. They are usually shocked it works. It may have something to do with our perpetual attempts at weight-loss throwing our metabolism out of kilter. Anyway, I'm glad you're going to go with a number that is comfortable and works for you. As far as the diagnosis, I am so sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're finally getting to the bottom of it, after all these years. I hope knowing the answer helps you to get the progressive care that will get you as solid as possible, and I hope it all works out well in the end. BEST WISHES TO YOU, Glammer!!! We're rooting for ya.

Hi Everyone! Thank you all so much for the great encouragement & advice. I've been very busy lately, which for this old country gal is pretty rare. Good news - I'm approved for 4 more PT sessions! Not as much as I hoped for, but better than nothing. Also, I lost 1.2 lbs last week, even though Daughter & I went out to dinner & I ate lots of fattening shrimp in a salad, which I love. It was in a taco bowl which I also love, but I hardly ate any of it, so I was a pretty good girl, hee hee. I'm so thankful for my buddies here on FS, & like Rob I've realized that we're not just in this group for while we're losing our weight but for life, as we'll always need support from those who are making this journey with us. Hugs & Blessings to you all, <3 Glammer <3
