Every now and again, I like baked beans as a treat, but they have an insane amount of sugar and sodium. So I drained and rinsed a can of black beans, mixed the two, and ate a measured portion. Still really, really good

Tried something different today and stuck a couple of 8-pound weights in a backpack to carry on my walk. Absolutely kicked my butt. Makes me wonder how I ever backpacked in the desert carrying 3 gallons of water in my youth. Didn't make it quite 2 miles, but I was able to maintain a pace just under 20 minutes/mile. Made it a more intense workout with the added benefit of weight-bearing stress on the bones.
Interestingly enough, this is about the amount of the loss I've maintained since I started seriously trying to get my weight down and keep it there in the past 3 or 4 years.
It's dawning on me only now in my mid-50s that I really need to do everything I can to build muscle and maintain bone. Can't undo the past but can do better moving into the future.
On Saturday a former coworker who is a total gym rat is coming over to help me develop a strength building routine I can do at home. Should be fun. Really nice woman.

An advantage of having a largely "ingredients" household. After mountain biking yesterday, I woke up with waffle cravings If I want waffles, I need to make them from scratch. Way too much effort. Your home food environment can save you from yourself sometimes. Biggest splurge this morning was some maple syrup on my shredded wheat with flaxseed meal and chia seeds.

This formation is called Death Crotch -- narrow slot in the rocks that goes way, way down. 4 mile hike, 2.5 hours, but we dawdled a lot in the rocks. I've had 3 big activity days in a row, and hubby is making pizza, so definitely going over calories today

Same rocks I've seen skiing many times. 2 hours mountain biking today. Not long after I took this pic, the sky opened up and the thunder started booming. We hunkered down until it passed. Both of us soaked to the skin. Still, a good day :)
