I started my weight loss journey back around February 26th. I was weighing about 228 lbs, wearing size 40 pants, and feeling miserable about being so heavy. My knees and back ached, I wasn't sleeping well, and my blood pressure was starting to creep dangerously into the hypertension area. At 5'9" in tall I knew I needed to reduce my weight but I really didn't know where to start.

My place of employment was about to start up another round of "The Biggest Loser" contest for employees. Employees that enter the contest pay a $25 entry fee, the contest lasts 12 weeks, and the top 4 "losers" (based on lost body weight percentage) receive a payout amount. First place receives $375, second place is worth $250, third earns $160, and fourth place wins the money that is paid by employees if they gain any weight during the contest (the penalty for gaining is $1 per pound).

The contest wasn't something new. Our company has been holding a contest 3 or 4 times a year for the past year and half. However, the timing of this one was perfect so I decided to sign up. I weighed in a 225 for the initial weigh-in and I gave my self a target weight of 195 to get to in 12 weeks. Having small modest weight loss goals never seem to work for me so I decided I needed a large goal if I was going to stick with it this time.

I came up with a plan to reduce my calorie intake, start drinking at least 64 oz of water a day, and exercising 3-4 days a week. For the exercise part of my plan I purchase the EA Active - More Workouts personal trainer game for the Nintendo Wii. I was so sore after my first couple of workouts that I could barely walk! I had to sleep on a heating pad to help relax my sore back and leg muscles. I started wondering what I was getting myself into.

The week 2 weigh-in of the Biggest Loser came fast and I had lost nearly 7 lbs in 7 days! You can probably imagine my joy. I was sore and I was hungry but I was also seeing immediate results.

I stuck with the exercises but finding the right foods to eat was challenging. At first I went with eating a protein bar for breakfast and eating less at lunch but I would still find myself driving to Wendy's to get a Jr. Bacon Cheesburger and small fries every other day. I also miscalculated how many calories are in a Subway $5 footlong. I was eating better than before but not good enough to get the results I was seeking. I decided to switch to a Slim Fast Optima reduced sugar Milk Chocolate shake in the morning for breakfast and I cut out Subway all together.

I discovered that I can't live without fast food and sweets. My solution was to find healthy alternatives. I learned about Taco Bell's Fresco menu. I love the crunchy fresco tacos. It's basically the same as a regular crunchy taco but without the cheese, sour cream, and it comes with a pico de gallo type salsa called fiesta salsa. I usually order 2 tacos and they are roughly 320 calories, with 13 grams of fat, and 24 grams of protein. The carb count is pretty low and you're getting 2 servings of vegetables.

I satisfy my sweet-tooth with fresh or frozen fruit with sugar free angel food cake and lite cool whip. I also try to eat a small apple each day for the fiber and natural sugar. All together, I try to eat 6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Since making this switch, I've seen a rapid increase in my weight loss.

I'm down to around 205 now and I'm only 10 lbs away from my initial goal of 195 with 3 and a half weeks remaining in the contest. I'm also in third place having lost 7.5% of my body weight thus far. I'm less than 2% out of first place. I'm hoping that increasing the intensity of my Wii workouts coupled with added weight lifting with free weights I can meet my goals and win the contest.

If you've read this far - thanks! I promise my futher journal entries won't be nearly as long. :)
