hi, Scottish, tall female, long time dieter, things have just got out of hand and I have just become lazy, in mind and body...began the healthy eating plan 2 weeks ago and KNEW that I needed some kind of support network, so here I am! I am quite artistic and love reading and cooking - not great if you love food and dislike exercise! I am determined to change tho!

best breakfast?
I guess you could have whatever you want...breakfast doesn't have to be the usual breakfast stuff, sometimes I have a brunch, around 11am and that kind of does me until mid later afternoon. I love the versatility of eggs, and you can add or experiment with them...if you are into porridge then that is great slow releasing energy food, and there is a whole load of cereals, you can make your own, with some oats, nuts, seeds, dried, or fresh fruit, or try your fruit with greek yogurt, or fromage frais, just have what you fancy, even if you swap lunch for breakfast etc; whatever floats your boat, hunger is never good, I get crabby and lethargic personally, good luck Smile

The rational and scientific weight loss discussion thread
All the studies are divided on this one...One interesting finding of vitamin C studies is that soldiers and marathon runners who took vitamin C supplements reduced their risk of catching the common cold by nearly half.

Few would debate the necessity of vitamin C in our diets. Vitamin C helps repair tissue, produce collagen, and heal wounds. Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant that plays a major role in immune system functioning. Most doctors recommend 200 mg of vitamin C as a safe, effective dose, you get this through eating six or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. A good source of vitamin C include citrus fruits, leafy greens, strawberries, broccoli, baked potatoes, and spinach...these are all foods I love, and strangely enough, I never get a cold! Long may the debate continue...will try your recipes deadcentre Smile

Oral anxiety

ok, here's the deal
my relationship with food is not a love story.
it's not that I like eating so much that i eat all day. is a compulsion, an anxiety disorder (I eat my nails, for example)
I'm aware that one of the best solutions to any kind of anxiety disorder, is to have an emotionally happy life
...
or sex
...
both totally unavailable for me right now
Razz
so
any suggestions?
in the case of surrender to the need of eating all day, y developped some tricks (with different levels of succes, of course), but I wonder if there's the only way...
did anyone succesfully inhibited this kind of addiction?
will i have to struggle against it my hole life?
ok, there's still the possibility of happines. yeah... well. that would be nice too haha

How do you fill your days? Have you always had this relationship with food from a child? I can sympathise as I have always been a comfort eater, tending to use food to soothe or reward myself, but then I only felt worse in the long run! It is only now that I can look at this and see how unhealthy and how much of slave I was to my emotions and food.
You need to break that dependency and change the relationship with food you have. Food is food, relationships are relationships, sex is sex, I think there needs to be clear boundaries and forgive me if I am being too presumptious but I wonder if you see yourself as being a victim, perhaps needing punished for something real or imaginary? Its like, you are being 'bad' if you give in to food cravings and yet you are being 'bad' cos you have no relationship, no sex etc; You are you, with all your hang ups and all your good and bad points...maybe start by increasing your self confidence,be proud when you achieve but don't dwell and berate yourself if you fail to live up to your expectations...have patience - its taken a while for you to get here so it will take a wee while for you to sort it out,be kind to yourself but do not dwell or linger on past mistakes and self pity...start with trying to fill up your spare time with something positive for you, exercise is good,or just finding out about what makes you tick, smile, feel positive, just take it a day at a time at first and then the days turn into weeks then months and hopefully you will feel better...sorry for going on, this just hit a nerve with me, good luck Smile

each to their own?
I kind of worry about faddish diets...as a life long slimmer, gaining and losing since I was 19, I think I have finally found MY answer... to eat healthily, but stop seeing food as the enemy, and don't think of 'the diet',but more enjoyable healthy eating plus exercise that you enjoy...you may have to try out a lot of different exercise, but that is part of the fun, for me anyway. I find this decreases the boredom, decreases the annoying cravings and adds to positive thinking...I am not advocating some miracle, unknown cure, just for me, after 20 years, healthy eating PLUS upping the exercise and movement of our bodies PLUS patience = slimmer, firmer body and more contented mind.
PS I have a long journey ahead of me but I see it as a wee bit of an adventure into the previous unknown...a healthy, more mobile, confident me Smile Good luck to ALL btw.
