My diet
It's my understanding that Welcol is for a combination of high cholesterol and if you are diabetic. I am not diabetic but would like to know for sure.

Thank you
Thanks to both of you for your comments and helpful suggestions. Right now I am seeing an Internist and I am in hopes she can get me on the right track as far as exercise and my leg pain are concerned. I appreciate all the support I can get.
As to the statin that you are taking, I have taken everything on the market with the same results -- severe leg cramping, and the doctor has taken me off of each and every one of them. The Niaspan doesn't work as well or as fast, but I think my cholesterol will come down with weight loss. At least my HDL is very high, so I think that helps.
Good luck to both of you in your efforts to lose weight. Isn't this site great?

My diet
Since I started journaling I have made a point of having oatmeat with skim milk for breakfast each day. I try to have my biggest calorie meal at lunchtime, and the smallest for my evening meal. Snacks mid-afternoon (fruit of some king) and early evening (more fruit) seem to keep me from getting hungry. I am also tracking my fat grams and fiber grams daily. The fat because I have high cholesterol that can't be controlled with statins (bad reaction to each I have tried). And the fiber because I am aware that we should all have a certain amount of fiber in our lives to maintain good colon health. So there it is. I did Atkins in the past, and lost bunches of weight quickly. Unfortunately when I started adding non-Atkins back into my daily food intake the pounds returned just as quickly. So back to the food I would normally eat. It is slow, but it works.

My life in gereral
I am a woman, 82 years old, who is accustomed to doing what needs to be done. So I am very frustrated because in my later years I find I can do less of what I enjoy (dancing, carpentry work, laying floor tile, etc).
On the plus side, I have a wonderful husband who has taken over the upstairs duties, which include doing the laundry. Since both knees were replaced last winter I find steps very difficult to do. Also a big plus is I have my music. In 1998 I was able to organize a community band. We rehearse at the local college. I play clarinet and my husband plays euphonium (baritone). And I still sing in my church choir. Music is my biggest pleasure in life.
I am hypothyroid and this has made it very difficult to lose weight. On a daily basis I journal everything I put into my mouth. Since starting that I have been losing weight, very slowly. I have 20 pounds to go to reach my first goal. When that is accomplished I will set my next goal. Please encourage me!

Mexican foods
Salsa is good. Also avocado. Avocado has lots of fat, but it's all good fat. I found that if I go out to eat a couple times a month the main damage done is collecting water weight (from the salt the cooks use?) and I lose that within 48 hours. Enjoy the Mexican restaurant food. Their avocado salad is a good choice.
