Annabelle3117's Journal, 10 August 2015

Good morning my friends, I have been waiting all weekend for the opportunity to wake up slowly then reminisce with you while I drink my coffee. Another clinical weekend bites the dust. Three down, five to go.

It was a good learning weekend. My documentation was critiqued, and I learned some things that will stay with me. My instructor is a tough love, real world sort of woman. She says she wants to orient us to reality and won't coddle us. She is a tad intimidating and I know she gave a few students a run for their money this past weekend. One poor girl was on the brink of tears. So far she has been nice to me though. It's not really my style, but I think she's the type of instructor who makes good nurses out of her students. I hope that I will be all the better for it. I have a tendency to bring my days home with me and ponder over every detail. Did I do the right thing? Was there more I could/should have done? I start to second guess myself. My husband reminds me that those patients have nurses there, even while I'm there, that are responsible for those patients as well. I'm not solely responsible just yet. I still wish I could call and check in with the patients the next day, just to see how they're doing lol. I think I did pretty well this past weekend though. I learned that as a nurse scheduled breaks mean nothing. I worked through my first break and was an hour late for lunch. When a patient needs you, that takes priority.

I am SORE! Clinical weekends are a workout in and of themselves. If I stay as busy in my job as I do in a clinical, I will be pretty set for weight maintenance with just diet alone. All of the squatting and transfers yesterday have left me feeling like I did a strength training workout. My total steps for Saturday and Sunday are 33,489. No intentional exercise, just clinical. My calorie deficit for the weekend was 3,700. I'm actually going to bump up my intake today just to help balance those deficits out. Oh, and you're going to be so proud of me, that includes celebrating my moms birthday at her party on Saturday evening and on her actual birthday which was Sunday evening. Two nights of tons of food, cake and ice cream, and I kept it entirely in check. Not one alcoholic beverage was consumed... and I packed my lunch both days for clinical.

So it might be a beast to hit my ten thousand goal today, I'm tuckered. My plans include tending to my neglected laundry pile and getting my lawn mowed if the weather holds out. Going to be in recovery mode for a day or so. I admit it's ten a.m. and all I've done is write this journal, drink some coffee and make my son some toast. It's okay, I think I've earned it.

Have a wonderful day!

Fantastic work - eventually you will get to a place where you will leave your work at work - then you will be "professional" - love that you are resting today - you need the break, too.

You definitely earned a day to be a little slowed down today! It sounds like you were in control over the weekend with food and clinicals, so you should be proud. Keep doing great things, and I hope you've had a great rest day!

This was good for me to read right now. I am at this very moment sitting in a hospital bed. I can see differences in the style of some of the nurses, and I've noticed a few "cut corners" (there's a whiteboard in my room with a "checked every hour" chart with spots for the nurses to initial...one of the nurses told me they have to do that on weekdays because the nursing supervisor is there weekdays...then I noticed a couple of them initialling two and three hours at a time - when they had never stepped foot in here), but each and every one has been kind and compassionate. And I can tell they are ALWAYS busy!

Yolanda, I think you will always take some patients home with you. Some and their families can pull at your heart strings. I used to be in the medical fields. I still remember some patients and have been away from it for almost 20 years. Good for you keeping to your plan. All that patient lifting etc. is a work out. Hope that you are enjoying your day of relative rest.
