Sodium is my biggest enemy, because I stay away from sugar. My armband pedometer heart rate monitor recommended that I keep my sodium below 1500 mg a day in order to lose weight. I have been comparing foods to see which one is healthier for me. I did not know that RAW meats had sodium in them, before you even cook them! I was comparing two meats at Food-A-Pedia and saw this recommendation about sodium: **If you are African American, hypertensive, diabetic, or have chronic kidney disease, reduce your sodium to 1500 mg a day. In addition, people who are age 51 and older need to reduce sodium to 1500 mg a day. All others need to reduce sodium to less than 2300 mg a day. supertracker.usda.gov/foodapedia.aspx

Deb I used to salt watermelon too. In fact, there were a lot of foods I grew up adding salt to. I think in some cases adding the salt is more of a habit than a desire to enhance the flavor. Like wholefoodnut, I came to realize that I liked the taste of most foods better without the salt.

I love cold fresh watermelon just as it is. But the desire to eat it sprinkled with salt is still there. How I used to eat watermelon as a child with my family in the summer or on family reunions is still in my mind and it brings back pleasant memories. Just say NO to salt! ;)

wholefoodnut, I used to make my own veggie burgers using textured vegetable protein and a hamburger press. I just got out of the habit. Thanks for reminding me. Is there an emoticon for face palm plant? There must be a book out there with recipes so that you can vary the monotony, which is what Morning Star was good for. BTW, not so sure Boca's sodium levels are much of an improvement over Morning Star.

I find it interesting that you're all finding the same pattern with sugar & salt that I've found with sugars & fats. It seems each food has a lot of one or the other, & when a product says "low carb / sugar", it's nearly always higher in fat, & vice-versa. Now that I have a better understanding & control in the carbs & fats realm, I'll have to check up on our salt intake. Eating healthy can be kind of a pain in the butt, even when you try to go paleo / whole foods, becauseof their natural sodium / sugar content, even without adding anything whatsoever to them.

I try not even to get that close to 1500 if I can help it. I know I really can't eat salt with iodine in it.

Chris, I make veggie burgers with beans, veggies, ground sunflower seeds, barley flour, sometimes garbanzo bean flour, use either the bean juice or eggs for the liquid. Never tried much with tvp.

wholefoodnut, I got my TVP burger recipe, along with a lot of other TVP recipes, from "The New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook": "a classic book of soy-based recipes from some of the best cooks on 'The Farm,' an intentional community in rural Tennessee. Features over 250 cholesterol-free recipes for family favorites." I just read something praising garbanzo beans - can't remember where.

Thanks Deb for the information i have been on 1500mg for about 10 months now. I have a hard time because I can't have nuts or sugar substitute because i have gout. I am on 1500 cc of water a day because of congested heart failure. I use MsDash only. I can only have chicken and limit turkey. I havent found a good recipe for chicken with the different MsDash. I wanted to know difference between kosher salt and sea salt. I have given up eating chiken because it always has that task like it smells before cooked. Thank you

@Raejah2 - Sorry, I don't know about kosher or sea salt. Maybe someone will answer your question. You might marinate chicken pieces with olive oil and lemon juice then sprinkle on your spice mix before you cook it, to get rid of the chickeny smell.

Chris, thanks, I've seen that cookbook, but haven't tried it. I kinda make mine up depending on what I have. I think my favorites so far are made with adzuki beans.
