About portion control. My daughter would give me a large amount of ice cream every night when she was getting some for herself. I never said it was too much. I just ate it. When I started tracking my foods on my armband website last fall, I knew that I could not eat a huge bowl of ice cream, just one serving of ice cream, only 1/2 cup. The calories in half a cup of no sugar added ice cream are 140 calories, which is well within my calorie budget. After a few times of getting out the kitchen scale to weigh 70 grams of ice cream or the half cup measuring cup, I stopped eating ice cream. At first I berated myself and thought I am just so lazy that I can't get my own sugar free ice cream from the freezer. Then I realized that I am not a lazy person, I've become a much more active person. I just do not crave ice cream like I used to. The reason that I was fat was because I ate without thinking, without considering nutrition, I did not control my portions, and I did not walk unless I had to. With nutrition in mind and with portion control, along with daily walking, I have been able to lose weight. Everyone can do this. You have to make the changes that you can live with and get active.

Thanks, everyone! My daily goal is to walk 2000 steps but my average this month has been 3000. When the weather is nice in the Spring, I try to walk 5000 steps, but it's just hot these days. I can improve on this, but I really hate to suffer. :)

Before I found fatsecret my portions were way out of control. I would also think, this is healthy so it doesn't matter, wrong. You are right everyone can do this.

Great post. I also do that. And, at, particularly work, functions I eat whatever they put out -usually cold fried unidentifiable protein, in some unthinking way even though I dint like them.

I agree with you on portion control. It was shocking to me to measure what a serving was of anything and then compared it with what I thought a serving was, boy was I fooled. Like Ruhu says, mindful eating. I agree it starts and ends with the mindset. I think it is great the amount of activity you do. I am working on it but haven't programmed myself to be consistent with it. I got back from the gym, first time after my orientation. gonna try to make it routine.

Thank you so much for this wonderful, eye-opening post Deb! It confirms some ideas that I've had but hadn't put into concrete thoughts yet. I greatly admire your consistent weight loss, & all the walking you do. I'm wondering about trying to count my pedal revolutions when exercycling, as if they were walking steps. My exercycle has a mileage counter, but counting rev's might be more motivatonal for me than just reading numbers on a gauge. Hmmm... Anyway, have a great, healthy day! Hugs, Glammer
