GlennM's Journal, 29 April 2014

Hi, all. I am doing OK. On Easter I ate too much. But since then I have been doing low carb. Yesterday I went on a very long car ride through the Berkshires. If I get published I will build a log cabin up there or move to a campground in summer and buy a mobile home or trailer of sorts. I have back issues and arthritis pain. But I am OFF the narcotics - seven weeks now. I refuse to take them, as everyone I know that is on them gets very ill and sicker too. I will take extra hot showers... I have found magnesium helps a lot. Quercetin too - and that is good for allergies also. And lots of Turmeric, Ginger Root, Boswellia, etc. I take B Complex too. Valerian Root is the BEST thing for sleep - by FAR and less side effects, and a deep sleep too, but a bit bizarre on dreams. I am beginning to lose. Today - rain outside and it is cold - we have not had a warm spring here in New England. I adopted my mom's cat. She is a riot. Very loving and a bit of a pest. I will lie down on my couch and she will find me and start licking my face. The dog is a bit jealous, but they are getting used to each other. I have had her about five weeks now - no one else wanted her and I have her, she is black and white - a long-hair and quite the talker, she may be half-Siamese. I will be moving nearby to a better location on a bus route - many, many new townhouse condos for sale... and I hope to get one and they aren't selling fast so there will be one available for me to bid on the next few months. My lease is up the end of November, I hope to move in the fall and pay off the lease... I may join the Y in the next few months... for now it is a bit far with a bad back... but I should get in there at least a few times a week to swim. I hope everyone is well and I will try to spend more time on here than FB as this site is more productive, so to speak - my writing is going well too. Not published yet, I will send three books out soon to literary agents through query letters. A fourth book will be done this summer.

The Berkshires sound like a great place to get some writing done, providing lots of inspiration. Good luck on the three books you are sending out soon. Glad your mom's cat is wiggling her way into your heart. I sympathize with your back pain and arthritis issues. I am only 47 and have been dealing with the repercussions of a herniated disk/surgery/scar tissue for 11 years. My previous weight loss journeys were slowed by my inability to exercise. This time around, I surprised myself by being able to walk 3 miles 3 times a week with an exercise video aimed at older persons 2-3 times a week. Unfortunately, I hit a wall a couple weeks ago after going away with my husband for a long weekend. The week that followed was full of extra stuff to make up for being gone and ever since then, I am back to having lots of pain and numbness. I'm a bit demoralized by it, as I thought I was finally past it.

Yes, I understand with the pain. I was a medic in the Air Force. Were you an RN, LPN or CNA? RNs can be supervisors sometimes. LPNs often don't do backbreaking work. Today it is rainy here. I live in Westfield, Mass. - the mountains nearby are referred to as the Hidden Hills, but I consider them to be the Berkshires, not just what is in Berkshire County. Every mountain west of the Connecticut River in Mass. and NW Conn. is the Berkshires as far as I am concerned. I get lots of writing done here, but there would be less distractions in the mountains. I do not drive. I do understand your back issues, etc. --- Young people think being unable to work is fake. Everyone hits that point. It might be 18 for some, 95 for others. I knew a young man who had pain issues that were severe in his teens. He is unemployable unless he goes to school and gets a job where he can sit only.

I am an LPN. The problem is, no one will even grant me an interview because 1) I want part-time work and 2) the gap in my resume when I was too ill to work. So, I work part-time as a caregiver, being a companion to a woman with Huntington's. Very rewarding, but pay sucks. It is just hard to balance life with limited physical endurance. Driving sucks. Shopping sucks. Cooking for holidays, etc. REALLY sucks. Babysitting my grandkids is hard. Sorry to sound down about it. When I read that you wanted to go swim at the Y, I had a flash back of when I was doing that. The effort it took to gather my stuff, drive there, get undressed, do the actual swimming, shower and dress again, then drive home...phew, by the time I was done I was SO worn out and I hurt. Hope it goes better for you.

Good Luck on your weight loss and books. Have you tried self publishing as an ebook. I've heard that can be successful at times. Just curious.

Gillian - can't you learn ventilator work? Or work for a home health agency? There are LPN jobs there. Unless you are in the woodlands. There is no way you have to be out of work. Just tell them you want weekends, or two days and go from there. You can get the CNAs to do lifting. I did it for a time and it was just passing meds and giving shots in nursing homes. I can no longer do it, but if your pain is severe I understand. A nurse can have a twenty year gap of no work these days and believe me, one can find work as there is such a dramatic shortage unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Cag eng - I may self-publish later this year, but for now that is not going to happen. It can be an extreme waste of time, energy and money self publishing. A former schoolteacher did it and it has sort of left her book in a dead zone.

Gillian - look online for herbs to take. Pain pills like narcotics and back shots will quickly make one more disabled. I saw one woman who went that route - she was once a bus driver and she is lucky to be married to a doctor but I ran into her a few years ago and she went the pain med and shots route and she is in a wheelchair and she was not even 60.

Cag eng - I want to be a writer that is successful. Few writers make it big by publishing their own works. Some do OK, but they have extreme wealth or status in life already. I do not have a fortune to invest in a book - or marketing, though a lot of that is done by a published author these days anyway. I am very reluctant to publish my own books. It is good if one has money, otherwise - rarely is it a good thing.

Gillian --- The bus driver - I saw her at pain management a few years ago. I knew her from years before. Around the year 2000 she was fine. Ten years ago back trouble, etc. --- then she went the pain shots and narcotics route. I also used to live in a large apartment complex and everyone on narcotics gets deathly ill within a decade. If you can try to go any route but that one. I am in pain, but it is manageable. Can I get narcotics? YES. But I made the choice to get off them. Not for everyone, but they really do destroy one's health from what I have seen. Try to see an herb specialist in your area if you are near a city.

Hello. You might experiment with removing wheat from your diet and see how you feel. Modern day wheat is known to be inflammatory and actually causes more arthritis pain. See the book "Wheat Belly" for more information. Once I removed wheat from my diet the aches and pains were reduced significantly.

Thanks Bigbrass... I have tried everything. My sister has Fibromyalgia, but she did the 'no wheat' deal and it was useless. I agree some foods are anti-inflammatory. Mangoes give me migraines, and I love the taste of them. I am eating nothing but low-carb bread now, no rolls, etc. --- and so 'no wheat' or pasta might be a good idea.
