Diana 1234's Journal, 03 February 2024

Went for my 3 month post op heart procedure checkup yesterday at San Diego State University . I was so excited as they were supposed to tweak my pacemaker to allow optimal results when I workout. Didn’t go as well as expected. The exam went great, heart sounds strong so that’s a plus. Device check however wasn’t as positive. I am pacing between 92-96%. What that means is the pacemaker is doing most of the work and my heart is only beating 4-8% of the time on its own. We had hoped for better results in that department. Also my upper and lower ventricles are both pacing. The upper doesn’t matter, it can pace 100% of the time and it’s ok but if the lower ventricles pace too often it can cause heart damage. They tried to adjust it but it kept going back to original pacing. Because of this, they did not feel that it was wise to adjust pacemaker into full sports mode. They did do some slight adjustments but mostly those are to see if they can slow down the high pacing rate. I am allowed to work out but they suggested I do 4-5 days instead of 6 as far as weightlifting goes. I can still workout 6 days but they want me to walk or do some type of easy cardio instead. I also need to have echos done about every 3 months or so, especially if they see something on my heart monitor. I’m disappointed but I still feel so much better than I felt when I had the broken leads.( wires) I am able to get my heart rate higher than before so that’s a plus and my heart itself is strong so that is definitely a win. It’s just the electrical part that isn’t great but perhaps as time goes by it will improve. The Drs at UCSD are so incredible I’m so impressed with their knowledge and care. It is so worth traveling to San Diego to be under their care! 💜

So happy that you can get all this good data to be able to make all the right choices for how to proceed. Three months will pass quickly and you can have another assessment

Sorry you weren’t able to get into sports mode but sounds like things are still going in a good direction! And awesome that you have a great medical team. 🙌🏼

You got excellent care. I am restricted on exercise somewhat too. I have gotten used to it.

Are you still in San Diego? We're expecting a huge storm tomorrow in Northern California with damaging winds so I am getting prepared for a power outage. Not sue about Southern California. Sorry things didn't go as you had hoped as far as your pacemaker. I know how important working out is to you and I admit lifting weights has no appeal to me so it sounds great you are cleared for walking and other cardio activities.

Thank you all! Again, your support is appreciated! I am so blessed to have been recommended to UCSD for my surgery and care. They are amazing! I'm opting to keep a positive attitude ( even though I can sometimes be a cup is half empty kind of gal..) and we shall see how it progresses. Fritzy, yes we are visiting with my sister in SD until Sunday. It's her birthday. We will then be going to Diamond Bar to see my oldest sister for an overnight visit. We plan on traveling on Monday back home but weather is definitely an issue. We are watching it closely.

Diana sounds like you have experts that you need!!! That's super news!!! Have you thought about relocating to San Diego for a city to move to?

Mainecoon, I love the Drs there! They are so knowledgeable and explain everything as they examined me. Such great bedside manner! The device tech was incredibly knowledgeable about my pacemaker. We would love to live in San Diego but we are priced out of there. My sister bought a 1175 square ft house there, not even that close to water and she paid almost a million dollars for it.
