Fritzy 22's Journal, 28 December 2023

Decided to take my poor, sweet and bored dog for a short walk this morning. Just to the corner of my street and back, about 14 minutes at a slow pace. My knee was hurting a little during the walk, A dull ache. Now at 3pm the pain is throbbing and I had to take an ibuprofen. I think I will check on how the referral to an orthopedist is progressing. I need to know if walking is hurting or helping my knee. It seems like it hurts it.

So far, so good on my eating today. I had lunch around noon and that will be my last meal today. Although I did have a small piece of cheese before taking the ibuprofen. I know I will probably need another pill in the middle of the night.

I hope you can get some help with that knee soon.

Thanks Liv and Morticia. Resting the knee seems to be helping. The first week or two I couldn't put any weight on my knee. Now I no longer limp, for the most part. But I can only rest so much and usually around 5pm the throbbing b pain starts. I may have to hire someone to walk Bobby at least a few times a week.

Have you tried ice followed by heat? Pain is just the absolute worst in so many ways. You’ve been dealing with this for a while now. I feel for you. Sometimes you have to be a buzzing noise in the dr’s ear to get pushed to the front of the line so to speak. Hope it gets cleared up soon.

In random things, I had forgotten that Vicks can be used as a topical analgesic for things like knee pain. Try it.

Thanks YOH! I do use both ice and heat. I'm using heat more, because I keep my house so cold. The pain isn't bad right now. I am trying to stay off my feet as much as possible today and tomorrow. Mainly, the pain starts around 5pm and often wakes me in the middle of the night. During the holidays it's hard getting doctor's appointments, especially when referred to a specialist.

Thanks Kat. I'm not sure I have any Vicks in the house! I've been using the CBD pain cream my niece gave me and it works really well. Icy Hot, Ben Gay and even the prescription pain gel my doctor suggested all did nothing

I was dealing with similar issues with pain and my doctor told me that it’s much easier to keep pain at bay instead of reacting to pain and trying to make it go away after it’s already started hurting really badly. I’m wondering if you might want to use the ointment and also ibuprofen on a more regular schedule so that you take it BEFORE you start feeling such terrible pain? It worked for me and was a whole different approach to pain control.

Thanks Broccoli! Sounds like a good idea. It's just that I've been taking ibuprofen for close to 2 years, 1st for leg and lower back pain and now the knee. Before the knee I only needed ibuprofen at night when the pain was bad. But with knee, I am taking it 3 times a day, which is what the prescription says. It just seems like too much. I am trying to put the pain lotion on first thing in the morning before the pain starts. I've spent yesterday and today laying in bed while it rains outside, hoping if I stay off my feet more than it may actually heal. Still I got in nearly 3000 steps yesterday just taking care of the pets and preparing chili for the crock pot. My goal for today was just 500 steps, but I'm already over 1000

Fritzy have you had an mri? X-rays?
30 Dec 23 by member: Yearofhealth2023
YOH, I had an X-Ray in early November. Last time I saw my doctor he mentioned an MRI if I didn't feel better after the cortisone shot. It didn't help so I called the doctor's office and asked either for an MRI or to be referred to a specialist. They called back to tell me they were referring me to an orthopedist. I'm waiting on that. It can take a couple of weeks for a referral to go through.

Keep us posted. Sounds like the misdiagnoses over many years on my hip i dealt with. An mri would have shown immediately. End stages of osteoarthritis, cyst on the hip, marrow edema, bone spurs and bone on bone. I was essentially a cripple tho i could muster up enough bravado to fake it if i had to walk in front of someone. Now im like a 20 year old. No pain to speak of on the right side. Left will have to be replaced at some point. I feel for you. Push those docs.

Thanks YOH! I really think it's because of the holidays that I'm having a hard time getting appointments. First my doctor was gone for 2 weeks and now during the holidays the doctors are all covering for other doctors. I do feel like no one really cares about my knee issue but me. I know with Medicare an X-Ray has to be done before other, more expensive tests can be ordered. Hopefully next week everyone will be back from vacation. I live in a small community. Even though there is a nice hospital there are just so many doctors and specialists
