Kenna Morton's Journal, 31 December 2022

This is not a food or weight related post, but rather a question of what makes people tic.— there is a kid who swims where I do every day, and by kid, I mean 10-12. He is a very strong swimmer and eagerly takes performance tips from a couple of the other swimmers who have impressive resumes. I had a chance to talk to him today about what drives him, what he is doing over the summer, etc. you know— chit chat. Well, besides swimming he is taking a public speaking class. I was astounded and asked why. He said he has goals for himself that make talking with adults and groups of people on an even level very important . He wants to be articulate, concise and be able to express his opinions and ideas in a way that he will be taken seriously. He wants to play water polo in high school. Then there is another kid—5 or 6 who can swim laps without stopping for 15-20 minutes. His form is better than mine. Where does this come from, this drive and ambition. These two kids are not being pushed by their parents— and they are just two boys who like to play and have friends and do other things beside just swim. Every day I am just fascinated by them. And I don’t even want to get started on the 70+ year old man who swims balls to the wall for 60-90 minutes non stop every day. He doesn’t chat or socialize. He just comes in and swims then leaves. Amazing people out there of all ages who have a goal, for whatever reason, and are making it happen.

I know some people who have more drive and determination than I do and I know it takes attitude adjustment and follow through with actions. sometimes I can do it and sometimes I can't

Our son's teachers told us he was like this in grade school early on. Apparently a male teacher told the class that it cost $100,000 to go to college in order to motivate them. Our son asked us if we had $100,00 and we laughed. The teacher said that from that point on our son was like you said, "balls to the wall". We thought he would lose interest but, no, he became valedictorian of his junior high class and high school class and got a full scholarship to a private college, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Science Education and no debt in 4 years which is very difficult in science. So I tend to be very interested in people who are driven too. The rest of us need to know how to harness this power. The world would be a better place.

It takes me hours to write clinical notes because English is not my mother tongue, and I stay up late for that. I make this extra effort so that the physicians would take me seriously. I’ve been recognized for my clinical writing, and as the physicians took my words seriously, the patients benefited. Articulation pays.

I have mentored so many people on this journey so I know that this can be done. Just keep going.

Goals are everything or else we have no reason to be productive

I have been in and around swimming pools for many years and recognise these characters. Swimmers are a mixed bunch but we all have something in common. A determined mind set, to achieve the next length. To keep going until we reach our goal 🙂🏊‍♀️

Anne_145— my best buddy is at 77 still working at perfecting her stroke.. she was a competitive swimmer at Stanford and then did competitive synchronized swimming for several years. I watch her swim, she glides through the water and barely makes a ripple. Poetry in motion. Me, needless to say, not so much but I just swim and enjoy .That drive to be the best you can be never leaves some people.
