debrafrederick's Journal, 22 September 2014

Wow, setting this thing up was harder than I expected, didn't catch onto the choosing a diet thing till I had my beginning weight and my starting weight entered. So, I started Low Carb - High Fat on September 17 and I weighed in at 305 pounds, was keeping a food diary in MS Excel worksheet and looking up nutrition info on my food on-line....while doing that I found FatSecret and since I was getting all of my nutrition label info here anyway, I went ahead and signed up.

I have lost 15 pounds in 6 days, most of it is water weight I am sure because I had very swollen ankles and fingers when I began, right now I can see the tendons under my skin and my ankle bones so I am no longer retaining fluids. I am 49 years old, I'll be 50 in January, not looking forward to the half century mark. I have been heavy all of my life and I have lost over 100 pounds on two other occasions. 25 years ago I lost 110 pounds with weight watchers. I was 25 and I went from 255 to 145 in 12 months. I had no job so I exercised like mad daily. It took me 15 years to climb right back up there. Started Atkins when I was 40, started out at 305 and in 18 months I was down to 200. I worked full time 70 miles from home, my schedule left little time for workouts so it took me longer.

So here we are again, right back up there at 305 and here I go again. I have a colostomy since 2010 and part of my weight gain was the high fiber diet the doctors put me on for diverticulitis. Trying to force feed myself 46 grams of fiber per day really packed it on. When I hit 280 I stopped the crazy fiber thing and the fast weight gain stopped, but I was out of work, broke and macaroni and cheese and raman noodles, bologna sandwitches were our staples. One great thing, we could not afford fast food!! I have not used sugar in 20 years, I quit drinking carbonated beverages after my colostomy (when you pass gas into a plastic bag on your belly and it swells up like a personal flotation device you take a good hard look at flatulence increaser's). Anyway, I am not having any issues with the startup of ketosis other than a few muscle cramps. I have high blood pressure, un-medicated of course, I want it to go away. As of this moment I am not diabetic, but I am sure it's in my near future so, for better health. Let's do this, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!

Wow a comment! Thanks I appreciate your feedback and way to go on the nearly 30 pound loss, that's a toddler :). I am really focused right now, don't know how long it will last but I am hoping that sharing the struggle on-line will keep me motivated when I stall, which we all know will happen at some point, it always does. Looking forward to watching your progress!

Yay. Glad you are here! I totally understand the processed foods are so much cheaper and easier-but we can see the toll it takes on our bodies. I still struggle. I find the food tracking much easier here. I don't care for the exercise tracking (but since I don't really exercise, I guess that shouldn't matter-LOL). I'm doing HF/LC total carbs under 50g. I've been trying hard to up my protein and drink water water water. Anyway, welcome!

Thank you! I have no issues with getting in the protein, I have to watch it because I will go overboard on the meat, the pure fats are my issue right now, getting myself to 79% of my calories from fat and keeping my protein and carbs down to 16% and 5% respectively...I'm like, ok, so what do I put the fats on to eat them????? I saw a post about bulletproof coffee and while I am not having REAL bulletproof coffee, my version is making it much easier to get my fats in and since I'm a coffee addict anyway it's a creamy latte type drink early in the mornings, makes it feel perfectly natural!

I found the site the same way you did. I started logging my foods back in March and this was soooo much easier. And people are very supportive. I've lost 60 pounds since then, but my diet is totally different. I try to keep my fats, carbs, and proteins about even. It works for me. Good luck!

I was inspired by your post Debra. Our stories are somewhat similar. I too have reached nearly 300 pounds after twice before having major weight losses in my life. I completely understand being sick and tired of being sick and tired. I have used this site now off and on for years and found it extremely helpful during my last successful weight loss. We've done it before... we certainly can do it again! This time though, it will be a lifestyle, not a "diet" and our determination to live that lifestyle will keep the weight OFF!! Let's go girl!!!
