Navida's Journal, 04 August 2010

wow - i am having a rough time today. I am hungry and I need to do something for lunch and I want to go eat all the wrong things. It has been such a high stress day! My company sold to another and my job is in limbo. No one seems to think it's important enough to discuss that little detail with me...

I don't blame you for wanting to go out there and partake in all those bad foods. But honey, it's not going to help you at all. As a matter of fact, it will leave you feeling even more stressed and crappy. Then you get to look forward to gains, headaches, intestinal problems, and frustration. Sorry to hear about the job. I know they never like talking about it prematurely because they're scared you'll just leave and they may actually need you, if not in your current position, but somewhere else. Hang in there.

My wanting to go eat something bad is in my head, but not my stomach. My cravings have changed so much since cutting out the sugar that when I really think of what sounds GOOD for lunch, I can't think of anything. I think its time to flip through the cook book and find something new and yummy to try.

Its great that you can distinguish between the two. That can be the hardest thing to do. I am now starting to find new things that I like and things I thought I liked are no longer appealing.

Same here, Keli and Navida. I have finally gotten to the point where I can distinguish between hunger and munchies. Munchies are all in the head and are what I feel when I am bored, or stressed, or sad, or.....fill in the blank. Hunger is when my body needs fuel. Congrats Navida, that is a huge step. You are doing fantastic. Sorry about the job, but like Keli says, hang in there.

I have been hired, promoted, laid off, contracted, shipped overseas, rehired, merged and relocated with my current employer. It has been a challenging and exciting experience. Although, the merger was very intense. We were bought by another company and many of my former friends and colleagues either left on their own terms or were let go. The biggest thing you can do right now is prepare two plans. Both plans actually compliment each other, so it is a good idea to do both. The first plan lists your talents and skills and how those abilities map to not only your current position, but perhaps another part of the company that needs the extra hand. Make yourself flexible and indispensible, as well as defining your differentiator. Answer the “why you?” question. The second plan involves updating your resume (that'll be important to do no matter if you move to another department, change bosses or leave altogether), research the job market, your salary today and how it compares in the market, what are MUST HAVES with your employment and then the nice-to-haves that you could live without when job hunting. Point is, since much of this is out of your control, you have decisions to make in the end and you need to be prepared. Remember, the only constant in life is change. It is just how we react to these changes that is most important. Hope this helps and wishing you all the best during this transition. (And as Kelli said, no binging. It’s not a good idea in any situation. You are stronger than that. :).
