Yesterday was a breakthrough for me. I gained 2.2 stones (30 lbs) over the course of 2 years enough to put me in pre-diabetic category. My lipid panel was also through the roof for 2 consecutive years. The worse part of the weight gain I was feeling lethargic all the time, I had aches and pains, and lost interest in all outdoor sports and activities I used to love.

One day I decided to take my kayak out. When I tried to lift my 44 lbs Kevlar (lighter than most kayak) and carry it on my shoulder like I always have, I can’t lift my yak a foot off the ground. I had zero strength. There, just 3 years ago when I visited my hometown (North Shore, Oahu) I kayaked surf all day like it’s nothing. The reality hit me. The past 2 months I went back into running, hiking and working out.

I was a tad nervous yesterday. It was my first kayak trip in a long time. The group launched 45 minutes ahead of me. I was able to catch up with the group and towed an elderly lady who got tired back to the take out. I also portaged my yak by myself like I used to. At the end of the trip I felt I still have gas left in the tank. I am slowly getting my confidence in the water. My next goal is to get back into kayak surfing and open sea water touring.

The real story tho- my sweet tooth got the best of me when I got home, ordered carrot cake and chocolate cake (my guilty pleasures) from Uber eats. I left my order in the cart and didn’t proceed. Instead, I fixed myself 2 cups of coconut milk with Ceylon cinnamon. I felt satisfied.
