dieting with depression
Everything Leah said.....
I've been on and off depression medicines (as well as very very overweight) for 17 years. I ate food to make me 'better', which of course, it didn't...it made me fatter! I tried phentermine a few years ago (not the bad half of Fen-phen) and it killed my appetite enough that I was able to quit eating out of boredom and comfort. However, I don't think I can take it anymore due to a couple health problems.
Anyway, my doctor prescribed a different depression med, and it has behaved like the phentermine as far as helping me NOT out of boredom or late night snacking. It wasn't even like I was trying; it just happened. I wasn't WANTING all those snack foods in the kitchen. I will admit, the other night I had a bad night, and binged probably 1000 calories before bedtime (well, maybe not but it seemed like). That was really the first time in the few weeks I've been on my medicine that I've really done that.
I woke up the next day and said ENOUGH. I figured out my diet (I still basically knew how to cut down and track calories from losing 20 pounds a couple years ago) and added 30 minutes of walking a day. I tried doing pushups but OMG are you kidding me? LOL
Also, I have been diagnosed with severe B12 deficiency and unable to absorb OTC B12 or out of foods. I get those once a month. My folic acid was also very low. Sigh, she also put me on cholesterol meds. I feel like a walking pharmacy! But I'm hoping that I'll be getting of the cholesterol meds when I lose weight and now that I'm watching my diet better. I think the folic acid tabs are for the short term.
My eating issue is the junk and comfort food, and binge eating. The cravings are basically gone. I also went from probably 24-36 ounces of Pepsi a day to 4 ounces (or maybe
. And boy do I sip and savor those four ounces...and add lots of ice so that it melts and makes it last longer! LOL
