How is everyone doing? These are the days we should be especially kind to ourselves, because they are so challenging in ways we never would have believed.

In our house, we are preparing for the long haul. Pandemic fatigue is setting in, but we can't become complacent. We had a short period of relaxed measures and even ate in restaurants three times, but those days are over. So we have stocked up for the winter uptick in cases that is predicted, we got our flu shots, and unfortunately we've had to stop walking in the parks because so many people were not wearing masks or keeping their distance. I'm starting a gentle yoga program I have done in the past to help with my back pain and for the general good feeling I get when taking care of myself.

Foodwise, I am not as strict as I was when I was trying to lose. Now that I'm on maintenance, I notice that I don't eat as big of portions but I do eat a great variety of things, and indulge myself in small quantities of favorites--primarily treats like graham crackers, small Reese cups, cake, etc. I made 3-2-1 cake for us with sugar free cake mix, which is fun, and sugar free oatmeal cookies. I usually have something like egg salad, pimento cheese, or leftovers for lunch, with olives and pickles and seed crackers. I make a lot of casseroles in the instant pot for supper, but also a lot of veggies. I roast them in our air fryer, or stir-fry them in a wok. Here in Texas it's still pretty warm, but soup season is on the way and I'm looking forward to it. I do want to watch my sugar more, so that is a goal.

One thing that has helped all of our attitudes in our home and kept us from sitting around noshing is having projects going. I always knit and crochet, but now I'm also relearning to weave. My husband and our daughter are each building a computer from components. It's been cute watching them plan and research and source together.

Whether you're weight is up or down or static, try to give yourself a break these days. Practice a lot of self care. Talk nicely to yourself, because this is really hard. Much love!

August in Texas has proven too hot for me, and I've had to stop walking my 3 miles a day until it cools down. At the same time and for the same reason, my appetite is diminished. So I can concentrate on other things right now and let a few weeks pass until it's cooler. Meanwhile, I've gathered seeds while I walked the past few months and now I am attempting to germinate them. This morning I saw that one has sprouted! They are mostly trees and flowering bushes, so I'm going to winter them in the house, or that's the plan.

Lots of days now I am not hungry for supper. Sometimes I have something very light, but sometimes I just don't eat. If I feel hungry before bed, I take a bath, read and then I'm so relaxed I just go to sleep. I don't find that being hungry wakes me up or anything, and in the morning I'm not ravenous. I guess that it's just too hot and it saps even the desire to eat!

Also, we are getting tons of cucumbers from our garden, making salads and buying fruit. This is always my summer M-O.

Have been dealing with some emotional issues. Our parents are all in their '80s and declining. Separation from some of them and dealing with caring for the one who is local has had me thinking too much about my own mortality--oh, and of course isolation with the ever-present covid-19 illness and death looming contributes to my darkening mood. I am missing my grandkids. But we're all going through this--in the same way that many hands make light work, I am comforted to know that I'm not alone in these times. And if any of you needs a friend to talk through your feelings, I am here for you.
