02 October 2007

I want to go and weigh myself, because I'm feel pretty good today...but someone else was in the bathroom (we have a fancy scale in our work bathroom because for a while some employees were all on diets at the same time and competing--you paid $100 to enter and the person who lost the highest percentage won).

Anyway, I was clearing out all my too big clothes, and all my clothes that I don't really like and only wore to avoid shopping this weekend.

I realized something. As I gained weight I thought I looked successively worse and hated to shop at each stage. As I lose the weight I look so much better than I did a few pounds ago that I'm liking to shop again--even though I'm still heavier than I was when I started gaining (I look back at the pictures of me getting married and realize how fat I thought I was, and I'm still 3-4 sizes and 40 pounds heavier right now!). I pulled out stuff and thought, "Why did I bother packing this away??? I didn't like it then, and I won't wear it now!

I only wear clothes I like and feel good in now!

I would like to say here that I think I finally conquered the demon of all my past dieting...the beat myself up factor. In the past, if I cheated and ate something "sinful" I just threw in the towel and went crazy for the rest of the day and told myself I'd start over again tomorrow (or the next week). Now, if I eat it, I write it down, even it means at the end of the week I have a negative in my weekly points. I ate a piece of cake this weekend (I split it with my two year old), and that was it. I didn't go crazy. I try never to say I can't have something (unless I really don't want it, and then I can use the diet as an excuse). I am hoping this means I can do this forever.

I AM VINDICATED, by the way. My skinny husband has "slightly" elevated cholesterol! He said it was only 7 points above normal, but I pointed out that his fat wife (who you would expect to have high cholesterol) doesn't have elevated cholesterol...because I eat healthier and always have!! I just eat too much, and indulge too much.

On a side note, I have started walking our office parking lot (hopefully) four times a day. That makes an extra mile a day (it's about 1/4 mile around). I do it when I get to work, right before I leave, once mid-morning to "earn" a mid-morning snack (a bowl of 0-1 point soup), and once before lunch to earn my "lunch". Other trips with co-workers are bonuses!

I actually didn't over snack this weekend, I'm quite proud of myself!

I just wanted to take a moment and say that sandwiches are wonderful on a diet! When people ask me what I'm having for lunch and I say a sandwich, they look at me as though that couldn't be diet food!

I also use "breakfast sandwiches" for the days I have to eat my lunch on my way to class.

My Basic Sandwich:

2 slices of double fiber bread (50 calories per slice--I found some the other day that was 100 calories per slice!!) - 1.5 points
1 serving (1 point) of low-fat turkey or chicken luncheon meat
1 slice 2% cheese, or 2 slices fat-free cheese (which seems to taste much better than I remember, I shunned it until this weekend, and it was fine...maybe my taste buds have accustomed themselves to fat-free)

My Basic Breakfast Sandwich:
1 light high fiber English muffin (1 point)
1 slice 2% cheese, or 2 slices fat-free cheese
1 -1 point serving "veggie burger" type patty (I like Portobello’s), low-fat turkey bacon, or luncheon meat

Then I keep on hand some, all or other of the following:

Dill pickle stackers
Tomato slices
Spinach, lettuce, sprouts or other greens
Roasted red peppers
Raw or sautéed onions
Raw or sautéed mushrooms
Mustard (any flavor as long as it is non-fat)
Fat-free mayonnaise, spiked with chopped radish or horseradish
Cucumber slices
Green and red pepper slices
Peppercini rings
Jalapeño rings (if you like them, I don’t)

For breakfast, over the weekend I cut two or three English muffins in half and top one side of each with the cheese, and the other side with meat and toast them in my oven. Then I let them cool and wrap them in waxed paper. On Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have class I open a packet up, top it with anything I want hot and pop it in the microwave for a minute. Then I add any other toppings that suit my fancy (the bigger the better!), wrap it back up and go about my business. By the time I reach a place on the highway I feel I can eat without endangering lives, the whole thing is a bit warm and melty and yummy! All for 3 points!

For lunch, I make the thickest sandwich I can, add a big side of veggies (baby carrots, sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower, pepper slices, celery, etc. with 2 tablespoons of fat-free ranch). I have a giant plate of food (bigger than most TV dinners) for about 6 points (depending on the veggies).

If I am able to eat it all, I eat a 100-calorie bag of chips as my “treat”! I just get tired of when I tell people I'm eating a sandwich (and think of the variety I can create), they self righteously say, "I'm eating X TV dinner." I getting fresh vegetables people, they are much better!! I just can’t say this out loud at work, it might be considered rude.

I went crazy this weekend, I couldn't seem to stop snacking (although I tried to keep them smart), I've already used up all my weekly points...and I have two days left!

I weighed this morning, and at least the scale (my co-workers keep in the bathroom) at work shows I've lost 2 pounds!!

Sometimes I think your body NEEDS extra fuel to burn, and if you starve yourself you're not doing it any favors!

I never starve myself, and I try not to beat myself up over my downfalls...but I have been working out (M-F, I fail on weekends!), and maybe I need a bit more energy to make up for that!

The weather is starting to cool, and my husband and I both have Sunday off. We should use it to clean our house....but I think I'd rather take my son to the zoo and for a picnic! He won't be an adorable toddler who thinks his parents are wonderful for long! Plus think of the activity points I can earn from walking for eight hours! might be able to eat something really yummy!

What I ate (for the humor factor):

1 - The chocolate and fruit out of my husband's trail mix (annoyed husband when all he got was a mouthful of peanuts and wasabi peas)
2 - My son and I split (mostly me) four of those toddler snack tubes (the sweet puffed cereal type--low in fat and calories...and just a bit sweet)
3 - Angel Food Cake (with fruit and fat-free whipped topping)
4 - "Fries" (I have decided that either I can't make decent baked fries, or it can't be done--I'm giving up)
5 - Flat Earth peach chips...weighed out (at least I did that!)

This was pretty much all on Saturday night....I just couldn't seem to stop snacking!!! This was all also outside my normal meals, ie. in addition to dinner (burger and "fries") that I'd already eaten.
