30 May 2014

Day 33/1st day off of Whole30! I lost 13 pounds over the course of the month and, get this, 6 inches off of my waist! I know that the majority of those inches were fluid, but what a difference a month can make.

At breakfast I reintroduced peanuts via a Larabar (and found out that I do not like the peanut Larabars!). For lunch I'll still have my Whole30 compliant lunch of steamed veggies and a hamburger patty. For supper I'll eat whatever they have at my Union meeting since we're being informed of the negotiation results and our new contract. I plan on eating Whole30 the majority of the time but there are times when doing so is just not feasible without being a total jerk to the host of the party or a waiter (hello baby showers and Mexican restaurants). But, 95% of the time, I'm not in those situations. I'm single and live alone and completely control what comes into my house and body.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Today is day 30!!! WoooHoooo!!! I feel fine. My digestive system is back to being normal after whatever virus I had passed. I broke up with my boyfriend (of like 6 weeks so not the biggest deal, but he acted like I killed his cat or something) and didn't even think about grabbing fast food or a sweet! I went to a movie last night and before hand remembered I hadn't eaten. I went to a restaurant that was across the street and the only thing on the menu that I could eat was the meat skewers. They were delicious and it didn't bother me that I couldn't have enchiladas or nachos that everybody else had. Because my food was tasty and filling and I don't have to eat all the food all the time.

Like I've said before, I'm going to continue through Thursday night, weight Friday morning, and then eat a slice of pizza and a glass of wine on Friday night. (And Saturday I might have a donut or a cupcake depending on how I feel). I'm not going to go nuts. I won't eat a box of pizza and drink a bottle of wine. I won't eat a dozen donuts or more than one cupcake. Then come Monday, it's back to business :)

Hope everyone has a great week!

Today is day 26 of Whole30. I ended up getting a virus on Wednesday and having to stay home from work. At first I thought it was “just” a migraine but it turned into a raging stomach bug. Some of the unfortunate symptoms are still ongoing but I’m at work toughing it out. Normally I would have gone back to my old way of eating using stomach symptoms as a reason to eat all the whites-bread, sugar, potatoes, etc. I used to think that they sat better in my stomach. But in reality I think they were the reason that I had stomach issues regularly to begin with.
I’ve had digestive issues since I was a kid. I had a pretty severe cow’s milk allergies as a child and had to drink goat milk until I went to school. Eventually my family just started giving me cow’s milk again because goat milk wasn’t easily obtained and was pretty expensive. I flip flopped between not going or going constantly to the bathroom depending on food I was eating, my emotions, or whether or not I was in an environment I felt comfortable.
When I was 17 I lost a ton of weight (almost 100 pounds) rapidly by going on Weight Watchers. After I plateaued around 140 lbs, I started getting intense intermittent stomach pains. It felt like someone was stabbing me. After going to about a million doctors, one actually decided that giving me a million pregnancy tests wasn’t the answer (I was 17 and raised in a super religious house, no way was I pregnant. Although that didn’t mean my grandma didn’t get super angry every time the doctor made me take a stupid test!). I had an ultrasound that found a bunch of tiny gallstones in a necrotic gall bladder so I had it removed soon after.
After the gall bladder came out I had a really difficult time managing stomach stuff. I would eat and immediately get hungry because the stomach acid had no regulation. Sugar was the worst. If I ate a donut I’d be starving all day because it would immediately disappear. Whole30 has really helped with that. Because the food I’m eating takes a significant amount of time to breakdown (fiber from low GI veggies, protein, healthy fat), I haven’t had any acid reflux, weird stomach pains, etc until the virus came. It’s part of why I was able to tell that I had a virus instead of just a migraine with my normal stomach upset.
All in all, I think this experience has been excellent. It’s not extremely convenient, but I think it’s worth it in many ways. I’m still totally having a glass of red wine and one slice of pizza when this is over, but then I’ll go right back to doing what I’ve been doing.
Hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday weekend!
