This weekend my wonderful hubby, who loves to bake, made cinnamon rolls. From scratch. With butter and brown sugar and cinnamon and white flour and everything bad for me. ;) They were faaaaabulous! It was something he'd been wanting to try for a long time.

Oh, and popcorn. He made a lot of popcorn this past week. With butter and brown sugar and cinnamon and everything bad for me. And it was faaabulous, too!

So we had a wee bit of a talk last night about all of that. I have no problem with not buying a particular carbalicious food in a grocery store, or not ordering it in a restaurant, but I don't have the heart to refuse food from my husband's hands.

I explained that I never want to reject him or his wonderful goodies made with love, but cinnamon rolls or popcorn need to be an occasional treat for me, not every day or even every week. He was very understanding and said he doesn't want to sabotage me. He has noticed the weight loss and likes what he's seeing. ;)

And in the end, it appears I've lost almost two pounds since my last weigh-in. We did a ton of decluttering and cleaning and fixing up around the house this weekend. I guess I burned off the extra calories. So it's all good!

Hello, my name is Mary, and I'm a yogurt-o-holic. :)

After cutting drastically back on my dairy products for the last couple of months, I knocked back more than a pint of "drinkable yogurt" (a.k.a. kefir). Dang, I've missed that stuff!

For years I kept my fridge continually stocked with all possible flavors of yogurt and kefir. Then I started getting "virtuous" and buying plain yogurt and mixing jam or maple syrup into it. (In hindsight, I was probably getting more sugar that way, so it wasn't very virtuous after all, was it?) :)

"I swear, it was the probiotics wot dun it!" Er, no, I don't. It was all me. I had just been reading a very interesting article about the gut/brain connection, and that set my mind working, so that I bought a bottle of probiotic capsules at my local drugstore -- but that kefir was already in the fridge, thanks to my DH, who also loves the stuff. (He's slightly lactose-intolerant, but since the wee probiotic beasties eat most of the lactose, he handles fermented dairy just fine.)

So the acid(ophilus) test is: Can I consume yogurt and kefir in moderation, or will they always be wild binge triggers for me? We shall see!

Confession time: I really love McDonald's Filet-O-Fish sandwiches.

My mom was and is very health-conscious. (Yay, mom! I am sincerely grateful.) When my sister and I were growing up, she fixed healthy food, or in some cases what was then considered healthy food -- whole-wheat bread, lots of whole grains, wheat germ, lean meat, ground beef with the fat poured off, TVP and tofu, only low-fat dairy products, margarine instead of butter, no pizza, almost no pasta, that kind of thing -- and we never kept junk food or candy in the house.

Therefore fast food was a rare treat for my sister and me. When we went to McDonald's or Jack in the Box (anyone remember "Jack will speak to you"?), we weren't generally allowed to order French fries, and mom always strongly encouraged us to get the Filet-O-Fish (or Jack's equivalent) instead of a hamburger. So I must have imprinted on the things. I still love them, to this very day, when I had one for lunch!
