Hi - I'm switching from Atkins to South Beach - don't have too much to lose and will need long-term maintenance. I will try to buy the book on Monday. Hope to make new friends and keep my old Atkins buddies! I need to incorporate more grains and rice and beans into my diet as Atkins is too hard to follow for me financially. (Basically I did it for over a year plus by buying groceries a lot on credit and getting into quite a bit of credit card debt, so I think a less expensive diet will help me pay off the credit cards and also lessen my monthly grocery bill!). All advice on what to do will be followed by those who really know what they're doing! Glenn

Good luck Glenn. Funnily enough I have found that my food bill is cheaper? All those chips and biscuits and cakes all add up! What do you find is expensive?

Oh, for starters fresh vegetables cost a fortune. Fish is expensive. I don't drive so no one can take me to the bargain outlets fifteen and twenty miles away where I would save twenty or thirty dollars a week on my grocery bill. Everything I buy practically is on sale. I will avoid potatoes, but plan to eat beans, rice and maybe low carb bread and flax crackers (expensive and hard-to-find too). I may buy low carb pasta still but only if it's buy one get one free. Everything is going up in America much faster than my income has, and mine has gone up a lot since five years ago, but I need to be much more frugal. Cheap things I could live on like Ramen Noodles with butter before Atkins kept my food bill down when they were like ten for one dollar. Chicken is expensive unless it's on sale or I happen to be in a bargain store. WalMart's prices for the chicken breast are better than my grocery stores but it wasn't on the shelf yesterday when I had money - sold out. The WalMart in my town has a small section for food - I buy a lot there and save so much as the grocery stores sometimes aren't even cheaper when they're having a sale - tea and Crystal Light are two glaring examples. I wish I was near a bigger WalMart grocery store. The highfalutin people in the town over torpedoed a giant mega WalMart grocery store, we have lots of snobby middle upper class and those with even higher incomes who think WalMart and Target etc. are for low class people and only shop at expensive specialty shops not realizing everyone is a two-income household with $100,000 or 250,000 minimum incomes... I've had a tough life and once I started to have financial success had a mental breakdown and in America they cast people aside. Thank God for my dad who took me in when I was very sick, my mom told me to take a hike and my dad let me live with him when I was at my worst recovering with no income for six months in 1995. But I'm doing OK now, but no one is guaranteed a lifetime of good health and must plan for a worst case scenario, I always thought I would be healthy except the arthritis. I will not eat biscuits, chips, french fries or cakes by the way! Take care Jill, Glenn
