Fledgist's Journal, 31 October 2011

Down a bit more this morning. After a couple of weeks of not moving, it's gratifying to see the scales moving bit by bit. Now, I'm below 13 stone on my way to the next benchmark, which is not too far away. My BMI is exactly 26. I now have to get it down by one to hit normality. The Halls web site states that I'm at the 39th percentile -- and still overweight. Put another way, I'm below the median for my age and gender (or at any rate, for adult males in North America) and still overweight.

I'm down to 82.28 kg in metric measurements. It sounds much smaller that way (though I can hear my mother's voice in my head saying 'aún es demasiado' and insisting that I get seven kilos more off). It also provides a nice, convenient way of noting that I weigh 82 percent at the end of October of what I weighed at the beginning of May!
181.4 lb Lost so far: 155.6 lb.    Still to go: 13.4 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

:-). Well done Fledgist... I had a look at the Hall's formula...on the various "idea weight" calculations there seems to be such a variety of "ideal weights". Some say I should be 24 pounds lighter! 146 pounds (10 stone 6 pounds). When I was in my late twenties, early thirties, my lowest weight was 9 stone 10 pounds, but I was reasonably comfortable at 10 stone 4-8 pounds. Now I am 62, I know that sort of weight, would make me look like a bag of bones. I think what ever weight you feel "comfortable" at, and can feel that you haven't got rolls or chunks of fat on your body. Is the weight you should strive for.... It is not about the numbers on the scale, or the BMI - but like you, it's a feel good factor to be classed as "normal" - even though you know it is a "pants" measure LOL.

Ok, putting all of your analytical male mind to sleep...how do you feel? If you could not look at another chart, step on another scale, or ever have any idea what someone else (or you) actually weighs... how do you FEEL? Are you happy with where you are at? Do you instinctively feel a few more pounds will bring you to the visual goal you must have when you look in the mirror? These things...are a much better way to define your GOALS, now that you are in a 'healthy' range. When we start out... it's rather a random act of insanity when we choose our initial 'goal weight'. It's typically based on science, charts, averages, prior histories, etc... but certainly with true experience. Even if we were once at our Goal Weight - now at a different age, and physical condition (as skinny suggested)... we will look and feel differently at that same 'poundage.' You may find you want to shift into Maintenance before your goal, or you may want to continue for another 3, 5, or 10 lbs past your goal. It becomes a subjective (and very personal) choice at that point...regardless of any chart, or scale, or whathaveyou! You, have done a fantastic job!!! No matter what any of those measures say...you have transformed your world!!! Much Love.

Sk1nny, a lot of the ideal weight calculations are based on figuring out standard adult weights for medical dosage purposes (what does a standard adult weigh -- so that the pharmaceutical companies can work out what an adult dose of a drug should be). When I was 25, I weighed 10 stone on the nose. I think that if I weighed 10 stone now, I'd be skin and bone. Julia, I'm not yet happy with where I am. I've still got some flab on me. I feel remarkably good.

Well done Fledgist... Well done! (applause) Hope you find you perfect weight... where you want to be... and then maintain too... I know you'll make it. There is much at stake.. and our health... well the cost of that is priceless! Isn't it?
