Be careful not to increase your distance too much too quickly (it puts you at high risk for injury). The rule-of-thumb is to increase your mileage by no more than 10% per week.

Good info, thanks! I thought my new course would be "a lot" longer, but turned out to be less than 1 mile. I also need to rethink my preference of running on dirt roads and trails as they are not "smooth" - I don't want to twist an ankle or fall!

No problem! I learned the 10% rule the hard way (shin splints, achilles tendonitis, fasciitis...), yuck. I think I walked like a duck for a month because I was in so much pain.
You can also check your distance using mapmyrun.com. It's really helpful in planning routes too:).
