GLAMMER's Journal, 19 July 2015

YAY! Between having liquid diet drinks for breakfast & exercising, I've finally lost a couple more pounds. I would probably have lost a little more but had a big dinner of fried seafood last night. Hubs & I drove to the coast to celebrate both of our birthdays, as we try to do every year. This time on our way we stopped at a Smoke Jumpers museum, located next to our little local airport. The guided tour was very informative & our guide was a retired Smoke Jumper. Smoke Jumpers are specially trained fire fighters who parachute into very hard-to-reach fire areas. Our tour covered three buildings & we learned about how they carefully plan & execute each jump, & about all of the special equipment they use, & many other interesting details about the Smoke Jumpers. There are still Smoke Jumper teams today, all over the world in areas with very steep terrain that makes fire fighting exceptionally difficult, including China & Russia. After the Smoke Jumpers museum we drove on to the coast. US Highway 199 leads through part of the world famous Redwood Forest, & you actually have to drive down into California & cross the border back into Oregon to reach the Oregon coast. Kind of weird, but it is a beautiful trip. We stopped at Harris Beach State Park in Brookings, as we had read online that it was "accessible". Weeell, the only handicapped parking spaces were in an upper lot, then we had to walk down a little hill to the lower parking lot, where there were NO handicapped parking spaces. Go figure! The cement ramp that led down to the beach was a 4-level, zig-zag structure that was fairly flat & easy to walk on using my seated walker, but it was quite a distance. Once on the beach we had to walk about 800 feet (my estimate) to actually get to the water. It was fun though, & great exercise, so I'm very glad I didn't give up which I almost did. After that we went on up to Gold Beach to the Porthole restaurant where we had our lovely seafood meal. I paid for this trip with muscle cramps in my feet & legs all night, so am very tired today, but am also very happy & thankful for our lovely, fun & safe trip full of happy memories. ~ God Bless You, GLAMMER
