TXSnowman's Journal, 17 June 2014

Back from my business trip / vacation to Arizona and New Mexico. Between travel and meetings I was able to hike or walk 5 out of 8 days. However, I was mostly out in a lodge in the remote mountains without a say in the menu, so, as expected my weight rose a bit. Fortunately, I planned for this and dropped some extra pounds prior to leaving so that I'd have room under my goal for any weight gain. I finished the trip 1.2 pounds below goal, so I'm fairly pleased.

Friday the 13th was every bit as bad as you might expect. We stopped after about 8 hours of driving and my wife was in the bed of the pickup truck re-stocking sodas and ice and I was starting the truck to get the air conditioner running. My foot slipped off the clutch and the truck lurched, pitching my wife out of the truck onto her head and back. We needed an ambulance and a lengthy trip to the Emergency Room in order to ensure that she didn't have a serious or potentially life threatening injury to her head or spine. Fortunately, while the bruises and contusions were (and are) extremely painful, there doesn't appear to be any permanent damage. We stayed overnight in a hotel and finished our trip on Saturday.

Sunday morning, I took the dogs for a run. They had been kenneled for 8 days and were very anxious to stretch their legs. Less than 1/4 mile from home, a dog from a neighboring property attacked one of my dogs and then me. My dog had received a puncture wound to the scalp and to his ear. I had my left calf pretty torn up with two serious puncture wounds and some minor tears. The swelling, stiffness and pain have kept me from running the dogs since then, but I hope to get them back out by the end of this week.

Then I leave Monday for a 3 day business trip to Fort Worth. After that I should be home for most of the rest of the summer.

I hope you all have a wonderful week and enjoy the first day of summer this Saturday.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts. My wife is recovering well. She's still pretty bruised but should have a full recovery. My leg is remarkably infection free. It's still too painful to walk any great distances. However, I have been working around the property trying to limit the new horse's escape routes. Although we have 10 acres for him to roam, the first day we had him, he found a way to cross the creek onto our neighbors property. He could only go a few hundred yards before running into a cross fence where I could see him and easily go and fetch him home. I ran a couple hundred feet of fence to stop him from crossing there. Now he's found a way to get through the woods at the rear of our property and make his way to the fence line on the far side of our neighbors land. I can't figure out the attraction for him. The only way to get to that little clearing is by going through the roughest, nastiest, thickets that are full of blown down trees and jungle-like growth. It practically takes a machete to get to him. So now I'm getting ready to run a couple thousand feet of electric fence along the entire valley edge. At that point, he will, hopefully, be completely contained to our land. As for the neighbor's dog that bit me, they've got it confined while trying to find another home for it. I'd rather they didn't put the dog down, but I also can't have an untrustworthy animal in the area when my granddaughter is out here. Thanks again for all of your kind thoughts. I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!
