TXSnowman's Journal, 17 February 2014

Well, I guess its time for the mini-binge to end. I know that my water weight is still up quite a bit (I can tell by the painful swelling in my lower legs), however, a lot of this gain is just fat. No excuses. I just decided to eat a bunch of crappy food over the past couple of weeks. Part of it, I know, is the crazy long hours and a little bit of exhaustion, but lets face it, I made a conscious decision to eat what I ate. I wasn't attacked by a wandering band of chefs and forced at gunpoint to consume pizza and corn tortillas and chips, etc. I kept my calorie count very low yesterday and kept my consumption limited to a short window in the late afternoon and early evening. So far today, I haven't eaten yet, and will work to keep the calories very low and within a few hour span. I got to bed early yesterday and finally got an 8 hour sleep for the first time in weeks and will hit the sack as early as possible again tonight. If I keep this up, I should be back at my low point again in two to three weeks.

In hindsight, this will be good for a couple of reasons. Mind you, this was not a plan, its just looking for the silver lining to this cloud. First, Draglist had a link to a great article a few weeks back from a doctor that explained that after being on a long diet with a great deal of weight loss, your body's hormones and metabolism get out of whack. He said that to correct it, you need to go off your diet for a couple of weeks to reset everything. Since, my weight loss was stalled and my doctor said that my thyroid hormones were quite a bit lower, this little episode might help to reset my hormone levels and re-start my weight loss.

Secondly, this is a great opportunity to see if I can actually curb my weight re-gain early. Historically, I lose a lot of weight, and then, when it starts going up, it just keeps going up until I'm over 300 lbs again. This time, I'm trying to nip it in the bud. I've only gained a few pounds that put me up over 200 lbs. So, I'm trying to hit the weight loss plan hard to push it back down before it spirals out of control. I won't mind small fluctuations in my weight, I just don't want the massive swings that have dominated my adult life.

Anyway, its time to get back to work. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Yeah, I think thats why fad diets are so bad for you. They slow down your weight loss, and you plateau. Then when you go back to a "normal" lifestyle you gain it all back and then some.

I've been thinking about you. Glad to see you back. Only a little set back in a long journey, Nice job identifying what has happened in the past so it doesn't happen again in the future.

I am so happy to hear you say this about resetting the metabolism. I have a huge problem with my metabolism and I have been on a one week "toot" of eating things I have been denying myself. My excuse is... there really was a wandering band of chefs and they force fed me bread, pasta and boxes of Weight Watchers's mini cakes. They finally left me by the roadside totally bloated and cursing the lot of them. :) (I took your excuse and ran with it!). It's time for us to get back on the saddle again.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts everyone. I've been doing the 16/8 IF this week by not eating anything (except my supplements) until dinner. I will try to keep this up until I can get back to my normal schedule. I'm also trying to keep to an Alternate Day IF method to my eating madness. Eating very low calories on one day and fairly normal calorie counts the next. Coupled with exercise, I'm hoping that I'll be between 190 and 200 at the end of the season in mid-April. If I can start a seriously hard diet and exercise program at that time, below 200, I'll be ecstatic. If I do that, I'll be starting a diet and exercise program where I usually finish! So, I'm really pretty jazzed. I feel that I really have a handle on this thing for once. Even when I decide to go off the rails, I record everything I eat, so that I'm honest with myself and can make the proper adjustments later to offset it. Thankfully tomorrow is one of my days for higher calories, because I'm having dinner with the Vice President of a major national corporation tomorrow. I went on-line and checked out the menu of the restaurant we will be eating at and they have some very good lower calorie grilled chicken and salmon choices. So, I think that I'll be OK. Especially if I keep to the 16/8 IF and don't eat anything before going to dinner. Thanks again for all your support. Without you folks, I'd be lost (or gaining more anyway...lol) Have a great night.

the important thing is you are in control, you're human and fell off the wagon, but you're strong enough to fix this, its just a speed bump man. you've got this nailed - even with a binge.
