Try not to think of it as just a "diet & exercise routine," but a change of lifestyle instead. The typical lifestyle is to eat mostly foods that are high in fat, calories, sugar & salt and do very little if any exercise. But that type of lifestyle leads to weight gain, illnesses, and other complications. Try not to focus on the weight gain/loss part but rather focus on just being healthier ovrall by doing exercises that you like to do along with eating healthier foods. Bottom line is you want to be as healthy as you can regardless of your weight. If you make striving for better health a permanent life goal, the weight will come off by itself over time. I know that from actual experience. Hang in there buddy :)

Take baby steps to your goal and eventually you can see the results. It just takes some time. Don't give up. : )

Hey Alyce, a repair week for me is to do really light (no weights or vigorous) workouts like 3 times a week. I typically try to do that every 6 weeks. Last week however, I had been going strong for about 3 months without any breaks and my body was feeling it so I took the week off completely, except for Salsa dancing Sat night, but that was pure fun, even though my hips hurt the next day. I don't "diet" I eat what I want in moderation and only on certain days (helps me stay more focused). I hate cardio so I only do that twice a week but I love weights so I do that three times a week and it works for me. I have better results strength training than I do cardio. You should concentrate on one thing at a time. Either watch your food intake for a couple of weeks or excercise for a couple of weeks, once you start to see results you'll be encouraged to do both together.
