Giving the concepts of the Johnson "Alternate-Day Diet" a shot. It's one of the IF-type approaches. Did my first 500 calorie day on Friday and lost about 2 1/2 lbs. - probably water retention. Saturday was an eat day, and I did! I was hungry and I ate more than I ordinarily would, especially while dieting. But I lost another half pound, surprisingly enough. Starting my next 500 calorie day today, and starting hungry. One thing I notice, though - when you can't eat very much it's easier to get the recommended water intake because it helps you fill up. I see there are people on here who are doing this diet - would love to hear from you as to how you like it.

Thanks, Warren! I'm finding it's not that hard to do the 500 cal day when I know I can eat well the next day. That's the plan for 2 weeks, then you bring up the calorie level on the "fast" day somewhat (to 800 or more, depending on age, sex, lifestyle factors), depending on how much you need to lose. I first heard about this on a national news program where this woman lost over 100 lbs eating this way. On her "off" days she continued to eat even donuts and cookies. While I don't plan to eat junk, the fact that it has been forbidden has seemed to be a starting point for diet rebellion. I'm thinking this kind of approach may be more sustainable long-term - at least for me. I haven't read the book yet but what I have read of it (Amazon sample and the online site) indicates there are multiple health benefits, like reduced inflammation, better blood sugars. It makes sense to me to give the body a bit of a break but not be stressing from a total fast. My blood sugar is not stable enough for me to be able to do a complete fast.

There was a story on TV about this the other night. Sounds very intriguing. Keep us posted.
