Rowanfair's Journal, 22 April 2011

Was reading some comments in Dr. Jay's blog and read this by him-

"There is a lot of misinformation out there. For instance, the idea that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day or even more is something you run into all the time. There is no basis in science for this. You should drink when you are thirsty and avoid drinking calories. On a low-carb diet if you drink excess water you may exacerbate the tendency to develop hyponatremia (too little sodium in the blood) on this type of diet. When you stop carbs your kidneys will excrete salt and you need to make sure you are getting enough. Unfortunately, you see a lot of examples where wrong advice is given and people are told to restrict salt and drink lots of water. This is guaranteed to give you problems if you are doing low-carb."

In more personal news... leaving for Italy tomorrow so I probably won't be about much. I was afraid my pneumonia was relapsing but it turns out to be more like asthma, evidently asthmatics often have bronchial spasms as a sequelae to pneumonia. I spent some time breathing on a nebulizer at the clinic and have been doing two different inhalers and it is helping. But gah. So ready to be well.

I think this will always be a highly debated topic. All I can say, from personal experience, is that when I drink 100 oz (on average) per day I lose. When I drink less - the losses slow or stop altogether. But as with all things - it's not a one size fits all concept. What works for me is not what will work for others/all. Enjoy your trip dear. Im sure you will have a blast!

Atkins book advocated drinking lots of water because eating the Atkins way is diaretic. It also mentions to add salt as you are losing it.

The first Atkins book didn't but subsequent ones did after the meme about 8 glasses of water a day had gotten popular. It still doesn't have good science behind it. But as Keli notes, some people swear by it. I just get antsy seeing it handed down as a "must" to new people all the time here on various FS forums.

I think the longer we live Atkins, the more we get antsy over certain topics. I mean, sure we were there once many many moons ago but after seeing it or saying it what, the millionth time - it's really old. And tiresome. I hear you on that one. Oh, and if it helps, I think you are supposed to refrain from drinking water outside the country. So, enjoy not getting it. lol.
