It was an eh kina day. It was rainy so I felt a bit achy. But I have a question...for anyone to maybe shed some light on this problem that I have. I am on the Depo shot and have been since 2008. I think this is why I am in the boat that I am in with my weight. It has slowly went up. I know that the Depo increases appetite , is there anything that anyone has taken to control it? I don't think I eat that much. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. But for some reason I am ALWAYS starving even when I am full I feel the need to eat. Maybe there is other birth controls out there that does not have this side affect. Coming off of birth control is not an option for me. I need to find a balance for this. I mean 10lbs lost is good but that has been over 4 months!

Sometimes I want to give up because I feel like it is super pointless to even try when no matter what it does not work. But, if ANYONE has experienced this and they found something that has worked for them, I would love to know.

Maybe I should just hit the gym more often. I will try but sometimes it is hard to get there. I do at home work outs but the gym seems to be easier. I did find a 10 core work out that I love to do at home...which I am so sore from. I am addicted to the soreness. I know if I am sore I did something right. Anyways, yep that has been weighing on my mind all night...dang birth control and why it must give me so much problems!

The Depo shot essentially mimics going into menopause. Weight gain is very common. While it is very reliable, I don't think I'd want to be on it long-term. Maybe you should look into the Mirena IUD. Most insurance companies cover it and it lasts for 5 years.

I have looked into the IUD's however, they will not let me have them because I have no had kids. It's easier to come out I guess. They did just start offering a IUD for women who have not had any children yet. It is a 10 year plan and they will only cover it once because it is so expensive and I think that is something I would be interested in once I actually have kids. I came off the shot in Last year for about 6 months and I dropped 15lbs like it was going out of style. I did not know it mimics menopause that is very good information to know. You'd think my DR. would tell me after being on it so long.

I was on a different b.c. with similar issues and my ob gyn prescribed phentermine to me as an appetite suppressant. It is prescription only, one pill a day, and I found it very effective. It was definitely something I had to take early in the day or it would keep me up at night... but there were times I had to remind myself to eat after realizing I had not eaten anything in hours... I never thought about food... this worked well for me - unfortunately, my insurance did not cover it, and my dr. would not prescribe more than one month at a time, so I had to pay for not only the rx, but also my co-pay for a dr. visit each month and it was too expensive to keep up with it. I still ask for the rx each year at my annual appt. though.

I am trying to "train" myself that I am not hungry, it's the depo talking. And my boyfriends like "don't think about it". I don't think about it my body is actually telling me that it is hungry. I hate, hate, hate it! I go back in for my shot in May. I might just have to talk about what I can take to help. I asked last time but it was someone filling in for the normal doctor. Surely there has to be something!

all birth controls forms other than the iud will have weight gain as side effect. they make your body think its pregnant. I prefer the depo myself. between it and the pill is see no difference in the weight gain. plus to depo is not having to remember to take pills or having to worry about kids getting into it. Pill isnt that reliable either I was a pill baby and my sis got preggers twice on the pill.

alos drink a bottle of water when you feel hungry, some people confuse thirst for hunger.

My daughter gained a lot of weight on the depot shot. It took her some time get some of the weight down. Dont give up, talk to your Dr. about switching your birth control. Be sure write all your questions down so you are less likely to forget them. You said something about increasing your exercise, that may be a good idea, even if it's 10 minutes. It's 10 more minutes than you were doing before. I wish you the best. April 25,14 member: debi to go.

Not to be harsh, but you are taking medication for a convenience, not an illness. There are side effects to every drug out there. I think you really ought to think through which is most important to you, the weight or the pregnancy prevention. There are non-drug options for that too. It is your life and I'm all for you having the right to handle it whichever way you want. I'm just trying to point out that you are making a choice, but then trying to fight the expected results (hunger from the med). Research non-drug options, my wife and I used diaphragms for years. Just don't beat yourself up for fighting the logical outcome of a choice YOU made. Best wishes.

Usually with Mirena they ask if you're married, monogamous and already given birth to a child. Something about the IUD making you more susceptible to infections when you have multiple partners and, of course, there could be irritations to the uterus that could make childbearing difficult or impossible. I saw none of these as a con (married w 2 kids) so I've got it and it has been the BEST b/c ever. (I used to get migraines and "full-feeling" on the pill). All of the medical options use hormones which means that it will compete with your own and likely cause side effects.
