FitOKay's Journal, 01 April 2014

I was woken by a concerned husband at 10:20am. Hives, nausea, fever/chills, lethargy. I thought it was just particularly nasty reaction to spring allergies(was thinking maybe without the heavy steroids from the last few years this year was just going to be worse) until we found a spider in the bedding by chance. Just a common house spider people get bit by all the time without ever knowing (chances are my husband has some bites he's completely unaware of) but I'm allergic. Normally spider bites are just marked by slight nausea, itching and dizziness and I just feel a bit off without ever realising why unless I come across the actual bite &/or spider (normally the biggest looking irregullar hive with a fever at the site) and put it together. I've got a few large hives with fever at sites so I think I must have been bit more then once through the night- which also explains how horrid I feel.

I'm ok, my reaction to spiders has never caused anaphylaxis/lung issues so it's not as big of a deal as it could be. Just very uncomfortable/sick feeling and sleepy/dizzy.

I was just checking in to let you guys know I wasn't ditching FS. Food sounds like the worse idea in the world though so I probably won't be tracking. Atm I'm concentrating on trying to keep benedryl down for the second time... my tummy doesn't seem to care if it can help or not, just doesn't want anything in it o.0 The reaction normally only last a few hours to a day. With multiple bites it may be a little longer, or it may just suck really bad for the same amount of time =p

Wow! I think I would freak out if I realized I had been bitten by spiders lol. I don't think that ever happened. Since I watched that movie Arachnophobia when I was a kid, I kind of developed a phobia to them. Not the really small ones but anything bigger than a thumbnail already gives me the creeps! May your husband recover from that ASAP. And I'm sure you will too! You are ok but we want you to be more ok lol :)

Thank you guys. Lol Euheide, you've probably been bitten dozens to hundreds of times without ever knowing ;-) Oddly spiders don't scare me but my Mom shares your phobia (she's also terrified of snakes). Most people never notice common spider bites and even if allergic my response is the most common, I believe bith swelling and anaphylaxis are uncommon for spider allergies(not counting black widows and the like)- unlike bees, ants and other wasp like critters. I am feeling much better, so to answer my own previous question apparently I was sick for the same amount of time just worse. I ate a banana an hour ago and my stomach didn't rebel, so that was good. Chills are all but gone along with the hives, making it very easy to see the actual bites left behind. Which still itch like crazy despite benedryl and creme o.0 My husband is off tomorrow so he's going to spray and we'll spend the day out. We just mived in in early sept late oct and didn't even think about spraying then, probably should have.

Oh goodness, I feel for you! I've got it in the middle of the night to, except my bite wasn't a bite, it was a scorpion sting, it had gotten under my night gown and stung me twice! NO FUN whether it's a spider or scorpion! It all sucks! Feel better Girl!

I am glad it isn't worse Calyn, I am so sorry that you are feeling bad, I hope you feel better soon. Plus I am glad the spider wasn't one of those brown recluse spiders(not sure how to spell that)

@ Calyn - Really?? If that's true than I'm surprised heheh :D What size spiders do you think probably bit you? :P It's great that you're better now! :) I probably fear snakes too but I've only seen (in the wild) a very little one so far so it's difficult to tell heheh. I would not touch it though lol.

Thanks all. Njashka, the one we found in the bedding was just a common house spider. About the size of the tip of a pinky. It got me on my left pinky, left thigh, right lower back and right arm, which sounds really spread out back whhen laying down you could nearly draw a short line connecting the dots, lol. I'm feeling pretty much normal now except the itching =p

Ah Euheide, you don't know what you're missing. I grew up back woods South Carolina then Missouri. As kids my brother, friends and I would have very much deserved getting bit by all maners of snakes and critters. We use to go rock flipping on hot days looking for snakes at the same age my oldest is now. Makes me shudder just thinking of it.

Wow Njashka, I immediately thought about Australia when this talk of bugs emerged lol. Is there any animal in Australia that isn't incredibly dangerous? lol :)

Sherrie, we are in Missouri where brown recluses are pretty common. However most brown recluse bites never go past the swelling and slight discoloration stage (which is good because we still have no treatment) brown recluse venom is very different from other spider venom and I'm not allergic (found that out getting bit by one several summers ago. No real reaction just some swelling a faint purple coloring around the bite). My dad got bit when he was younger with the same reaction. A friends father has a hole in his skin from a worse reaction though. There was some info at the time I got bit saying they thought the brown recluse bites were like other spider bites and only a fraction of bites resulted in a reaction. I haven't looked into it since though, so idk if that concept has changed.

@Calyn - It's disconcerting the effect a spider of that variety and size can have :P That's one aggressive (or hungry) spider! I can't tell which heheh. That's definitely sounds like a fun youth! :) I used to play in the woods but the woods around here are pretty much harmless. You can find snakes if you know where to look for them but they're both tiny and harmless. There are very few poisonous snakes in Portugal and I think none of the poisonous are deadly, which is a relief lol. Sometimes it sounds boring not to have a more exotic wild life, but I am certainly grateful for it in those few camping occasions lol. ;)

I was thinking the same thing Euheide. Australia sounds pretty hazardous about critters. Here you just have to know how to spot the worst critters and generally the rest are relatively harmless.

I bet Euheide! We've got few more exciting varieties, especially in snakes, and down south has fire ants. But you learn pretty young what to steer clear of and go get someone to deal with.

Yes euheide there are really cute ones like wallabies, kangaroos(not boxing kangaroos though they are crazy lol) koalas, although I have been scratched by a koala their claws are sharp!lol;-) the good thing is you learn the dangerous spiders and what to wstch out for with snakes early on and for the other deadly animals like crocodiles and sharks you just don't go into their territory and you should be safe!;-);-);-)

Good you are feeling better calynLZ!

The biggest spider I've ever seen in the wild, here in Portugal was about the size of an average hand's width (possibly a little bigger), and what really creeped me out was the fact that it was one of those solidly built ones, and fast in a horribly scary way, with not the slow ones that look like they're built with hairs heheh. but I saw that one in a relatively remote inhabited place (a cape) and I've never saw anything remotely like it before or since and I'm very happy for that. I remember being paranoid about my surrounding like a full week after having seen that lol. I am a little paranoid right now just thinking about it ahah! In fact, I am just getting chills up my legs :D I think I am creeped out by large insects in general, especially if they're fast moving and/or solidly built, including cockroaches lol. I don't know why :P They will make me jump very high! Well, perhaps not cockroaches, I've gotten somewhat familiarized with those in the urban area ;)
