pam-u-la's Journal, 21 July 2012

Today as I get ready to spend the afternoon with my mom, I have been thinking about other family memebers. Particularly my grandma and great-grandma. These two ladies although they have passed on still remain very close to my heart.
You see I come from a long line of heavy women who although in todays standards would be considered as obese, to me they never did nor will they ever fall into the catagory. These women were strong mentally and physically and had endured some pretty horendous situations, my mom included. They all believed that hard work and determination could get you through anything. They also believed that you could accomplish anything if you put your mind to it.
I also look back to the meals that everyone created, and how they used whatever was on hand to come up with the balanced meal that fed many. Funny how healthy they actually ate. Grandma in particular always insisted that a meal had to contain a balance of meat, veg and some form of carbs. Dessert was usually fruit, or something homemade and fruit based. Oh I miss these ladies.
Now a days I look at my mom in a totally different way, I have finally seen the connection between her and my grandmas. I now look at her as an inspiration for here strength and courage.
I know this journal does not have a lot to do with diet and excersise, but I just wanted to share.
So my question is, what have you learned from those before you? What connections can you make from the past?
I wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Saturday. Much love and respect!

I think those connections are important - and can be related to how we view food and eating. Food is so ofen used a nurturing, or rewards - "If you behave well , you will get a cookie." We learn about food preparation from our mothers, and the idea of the quality and quantity of food accepted at evey meal. Food shows up at celebrations, and funerals. It is a universal language of socialiazation. Yes, we learn a great deal about food and eating from our past.

Your grandma & great grandma sound like beautiful women! they remind me of my mom. My mom was a simple lady who worked so hard. She "made do with what we had." I remember so many times looking in the refrigerator after school and thinking, "We don't have anything good to eat." What I really meant was that we did not have chips or soda. Sometimes I made myself a "toast & jelly" snack. Inevitably she was able to work her magic as she took "nothing" & made "something" yummy for supper! Of course there is a connection between the women in your family and the health & weight loss issues we discuss here! Hard work replaced pilates in the era of these women and the attempt to make a balanced meal for a family was called "home ecenomics" - as in the economy of the home! Not so much excess & waste in those days!

Love the tie dye! Takes me back to those days when we made tie dye in a dish pan with boxes of dye. So much fun! You have a pretty profile.

Thank you W4! That is the shirt my mom bought me from the sunfest. It's one of my favourites now! :)
