redwinelover's Journal, 21 February 2010

I've already cried, now I want to scream. This doesn't make sense at all. This can't be "math" (less calories, more exercise equals weight lost)! I've lost a "whopping" 1.6 lbs in THREE weeks. Yep, 3 weeks. And to add insult to injury, I actually weigh a pound MORE than I did on Feb. 10th and 11th. Back to what I weighed in on 6 days ago. This, in spite of adding to my work outs this month, eating less processed foods, averaging under 1250 cal/day, and practically keeping within my goal of 40% carb (actual was 41.7%), 30% protein (actual 30%), and 30% fat (actual, 29%). Pretty close. And, I used to have a glass of wine with dinner probably 6 days a week. This month so far I've had a glass of wine on 6 days total - 30% of the time rather than 85% of the time previously. I count all the calories of wine as carbs since alcohol calories aren't stored, but will detract from fat burning.

I've been doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred since Dec. 29 and have done so all but maybe 8 - 10 times. So that's about 6 days a week, and only missed two work outs so far this month. Around the 3rd of the month, I stepped it up and added a sculpting work out from the Biggest Loser DVD, and soon after, added another one. I'm doing Level 3 of the 30 Day Shred, and Levels 1 & 3 of the Power Sculpt DVD - about an hour a day.

Have I seen a difference in my body? Yes. I should be happy with that, I know. But there comes a point when the number does matter. You can only be so fit at 166 lbs when you're a 5'5" female. My new scale also records percentage of body fat and percentage of water. My body fat has decreased by about 2%, which is good, I know. But for the time and effort and diligence I've put in on this, painstakingly weighing, measuring and tracking all food intake, cutting out bad foods as much as possible, adding in fresh veggies and whole foods as much as possible, sweating like I've never sweat before during a work out - and all I have to show for nearly 8 weeks of work is 6 1/2 lbs. I know muscle weighs more than fat. I'm not new to any of this. And I realize I'm getting older and metabolism is slowing down, in spite of my efforts. But knowing all of this still doesn't seem to account for that type of weight loss. I went through some profiles on this website and honestly can't see how it's possible I can't seem to lose weight when my diet is (and not trying to be snobby here) generally healthier than the average. I mean in that I don't eat fast food, that I stay away from packaged food as much as possible (my exception is my protein bar), avoid simple carbs as much as possible, avoid "diet" foods - things that are packaged to give us the impression they're healthy when they aren't. They may have fewer calories, or less fat (and more sugar), or less sugar (and more fat), or are purely things created in the lab and not a kitchen. Trying desperately to go to a natural, whole foods diet and hopefully re-set my metabolism once and for all. Practically zero success so far. It's days like this one that make it difficult to continue. If I saw progress, it'd almost be easy to continue. I've had very few food cravings, I do miss my wine, however! But...I'll continue.

What this really does show me, however, is why I'm fat. I honestly believe that if I ate a "normal" diet of say 1800 - 2000 calories, I would be putting on weight. Which is probably what HAS happened. Hell, no wonder I'm fat! I really wasn't sitting around eating like a pig. Okay, honesty here - there have many times I've over eaten in the past. Without a doubt. But it's not like I'm stuffing myself daily. Okay, really what I meant was this doesn't necessarily show me "why" I'm fat, but only that if this is how I do on a calorie restricted diet with good, hard exercise, it does show me "how" it is that I'm fat when I'm not. Make any sense?

Anyway, I don't know if anyone at all has bothered to read this far, but if so, any comments would be appreciated. Because otherwise, going on my own gut feeling - this has to be a hormonal issue. Whether and estrogen/progesterone/testosterone issue, or a thyroid issue. Anyone on the board have a thyroid problem?

I understand being upset at the scale not budging very much. On the other hand, losing fat/inches is still losing. You can get to goal weight and still carry too much fat (skinny fat). You have been doing a lot of strength training, I would maybe do it 3 or 4 times a week and kick up the cardio. Cardio is what burns the calories. I wish I could give you more help. But everything you are doing will help get you lean and healthy. Maybe it's finding the right combination. Good luck!

Suzi161 thanks again for your support. I certainly appreciate it. The 30 Day Shred is a combo thing that goes in circuits. After the warm up, it does three circuits, each circuit consisting of 3 min. of strength, 2 min of cardio and 1 min. abs. I added another DVD, the sculpting one, which is a mix of cardio and strength training. They get you to work your lower body and upper body together, which pumps up the cardio burn a lot. Well, for me it's a lot! : ) If my knees ever get better, I'll add more plyometrics. That will get the heart racing! Again, thanks. I journaled mainly to unload some frustration, not thinking anyone would actually wade through the whole thing : ) I have one of those body buggs - I really ought to get it hooked up.
