ckworksalot's Journal, 16 February 2016

2 weeks since I chipped my collar bone and separated my shoulder running (tripping). I could not resist the 60+ degree weather today after this weekends 17 degrees, so I determined "I am running today"! Have not exercised since the injury. Did another 5k today with two 30 second walks in there to bring my heart rate back to the 140's, yet still finished in 31:45. Not bad for no activity in 2 weeks! Finished with three 1/10th mile sprints down my cul de sac... walk out, sprint back. Follow up with orthopedic next week to gage the healing. Feeling good since some guy posted online that his doc told him NO EXERCISE of any kind for 12 weeks.

Was feeling tired for the last mile and thought about walking home... then this song popped into my playlist, and the lyric just reminded me of all I have been through in the last 9 months... and I found my second wind! The lyric starts, " Don't you count me out 'cause I've fallen (how appropriate), out cause I've fallen down." Then the chorus goes "I'm gonna be the last one standing, fighting for something much bigger than me,. I'm gonna be the last one standing here. The last one standing wants it more, fighting for something worth fighting for. I'm gonna be the last one standing here". Here's a link.

... and woke up to pain in the right side of the knee... I suspect IT Band syndrome ... a by product of the sprints and resulting heavy pounding on the pavement. Wore an ACE bandage knee wrap to get down the stairs this morning, and now wearing a neoprene knee brace left over from ACL surgery long ago just to keep everything compressed... seems to be helping. My friend says exercise is killing me :0)... I'll take knee pain over chest pain any day!

Music does set the mood! I am not a therapist, but I heard cycling/elliptical glide stationery machines are good therapy for knees and injured feet too. Do ya think maybe there are alternatives that are more low impact exercises you can do until you fully recover?

Sure! I just did 40 minutes of elliptical and burned 447 calories! Wore the knee brace the whole time, with no pain, then stuffed an ice pack under the brace on the IT Band connection for the 40 minute drive home. Took the brace off to go through Costco and Dicks Sporting, then packed it with a fresh ice pack when I got home...FEELS PRETTY GOOD RIGHT NOW!
