Calories In Calories Out. Sounds simple, right? Maybe it is simple for some, but I see some very popular members here suggesting it’s as simple for everyone. Quality of calories matter. If you’re two weeks into your weight loss journey from 300+ pounds I think you need to focus as much on the quality of calories and not just the number of total calories. “Rather than choosing foods based only on caloric value, think instead about choosing high-quality, healthy foods, and minimizing low-quality foods.” That’s from a Harvard School of Health study, not my words. Highly processed foods like Little Caesar’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Mountain Dew do not fit your calorie profile. Go read about it yourself because I’m not about to spend my day debating this. Low satiety and highly processed foods will not help you in your journey. If you’re already fit and burning 4000 calories a day then go ahead and have your kids cereal for supper…but if you’ve been struggling for some time with your health and your weight…it’s time for a much larger change.

“One study, published in JAMA in 2007, compared four weight-loss diets ranging from low to high carbohydrate intake. This 12-month trial followed over 300 overweight and obese premenopausal women, randomly assigning them to either an Atkins (very low carbohydrate), Zone (low carbohydrate), LEARN (high carbohydrate), or Ornish (very high in carbohydrate) diet. After one year, weight loss was greater for women in the Atkins diet group compared with the other diet groups.”

Rick, results are results. Who cares? Here’s another study from 2012. “ The study, led by Harvard Medical School (HMS) Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Cara Ebbeling and Professor of Pediatrics David Ludwig, finds diets that reduce the surge in blood sugar after a meal — either low-glycemic index or very-low carbohydrate — may be preferable to a low-fat diet for those trying to achieve lasting weight loss.”

Are you advocating a diet of pastries, sweetened cereals and other highly processed grains?

Sorry…I’m not here to debate today but no one else is awake in the house yet.

Thank you, HK3. I recently read that heavily muscled people (generally male bodybuilders) can eat more carbohydrates than the average person without gaining weight. It explains why it's mostly the bodybuilders on this site want to argue that there's nothing wrong with lots of carbohydrates. Your post started out with food quality and everyone should be able to comprehend that a well-nourished body is going to favor success in weight management for both the short and long term. Bravo!

Trackin, of course they can. Their advice to the contrary and especially the promotion of eating doughnuts, pizza, and sugary cereals is irresponsible. Sugar IS a toxin and the body has no practical use for it. If folks would rather follow the advice of those members I have no sympathy for their poor results.

You don't want to debate it, yet you make a public post about it. Trying to cut out all super processed foods when you have indulged in them your whole life is more than most people can do forever and what results in people gaining all the weight back after a few months or a couple of years. The bulk of the evidence, not just one study, which is meaningless no matter which authority it comes from, shows that the all or nothing mindset is a recipe for failure long-term. People like you discourage those who are making better choices and including less processed food but still having some. I find your message unhelpful and incorrect.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Don't eat more than you burn (aka calories) in a reasonably healthy diet and don't let wackjobs with their own issues with food or short-term success tell you you can't be healthy or get healthier without eating only the foods they consider clean.

Also, your ONE study conflicts with meta-analyses of the long-term results of all diets: they result in almost the same weight loss and similar changes in health markers. Presenting ONE study that conveniently fits the narrative you subscribe to is not scientific. You're engaging in scientism, which is worse than scientific illiteracy. Shameful.

Any studies that show that sugar "is a toxin"? This is complete nonsense. Yes, people should believe some rando who doesn't understand science or how to use studies and uses words incorrectly to cause fear.

Not very silent, are you? Are you or are you not a shill for the fructose industry? Can you prove it?

“When you metabolize fructose in excess, your liver has no choice but to turn that energy into liver fat and that liver fat causes all of the downstream metabolic diseases.” -Robert Lustig. Look him up. YouTube “Is a calorie a calorie”. Fascinating stuff.

And lololol you acknowledge the fact that healthy and clean eating results in weight loss but because people suck at dieting it’s a lost cause and we should just eat at the mercy of Big Food. That’s right…just quit your diet because you want Fruity Pebbles. Smh

I know about Lustig and his questionable practices regarding the way he reports the findings of his studies in order to fit his belief that fructose is the enmy. There's nothing fascinating about hanging onto the every word of one doctor or one researcher. I'd suggest that instead of YouTube videos or worshipping one authority, you actually read the literature, learn what a meta-analysis is and stop fearing fructose without sufficient evidence. But I know that won't happen because when you lost the argument, you resorted to the typical, common "shill for fructose/big sugar/grains" attack. So, keep eating bacon and thinking that's clean and unprocessed, keep eating way more fat than is needed for healthy cell and hormonal function, and missing cultural references.

Strawman. There's no such thing as "quitting" a diet by eating some fruity pebbles if your diet includes all foods in an amount that fits into your energy budget. You sure seem upset that some people are fit and eat sugary cereal and donuts. And very reactive for someone who doesn't want to debate.

Calorie deficits result in weight loss, clean and healthy eating alone does not.

Some mythical mute is a pretty obscure reference to be fair.

No, I’m upset because life long fitness junkies who can burn excess carbs effectively glorify the mass intake of terrible foods and suggest to vulnerable and unhealthy people that it’s ok to do the same as long as CICO. It’s bullshit that’s been used by the fructose industry for decades.
